I know these flying monster questions come up now and then---and here it is again.

By The Old Man, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

Shouldn't item C) on page 11 read, "If the flying monster is in a street area, or location, with no investigators and ther are no investigators in a connected street are, it moves to the Sky."?

Shouldn't it be in the 1.2 FAQ Errata section instead of the Frequently Asked Questions section, "Please clarify how flying monsters move."? Because it's not clarifying the rule, but actually changing or adding to it. Or is my correction incorrect? If it is then a flying monster would sit in a location forever until an investigator is in the connected street area?

And if a flying monster can fly right from a location to the Sky, then why can't it fly from the Sky to a location?

Magnets.

Just like any other monster, if it is in a location or street area containing an investigator, it will not move.

If there are no investigators in the same space, it will move to an adjacent STREET AREA that does contain an investigator.

If there are no investigators in the same space or an adjacent STREET AREA, then, regardless of whether the flying monster is in a location or street area, it will move to the sky. Yes, even from a location.

Once it is in the sky, it will move to any STREET AREA or DEVIL REEF (of Innsmouth) if there is an investigator in one of those spaces when it moves.

Even though flying monsters can move from a location to the sky, they can not move from the sky to a location, sure it doesn't make a whole lot of sense, but you can make up your own thematic reasons.

The only monsters that CAN move into a location under their standard movement rules are aquatic and stalker monsters. Other monsters can move into locations based off of encounters and mythos.

Does that clear it up?

Yes, thank you very much.

Picture this: The flying monster is in a building when it comes through the gate. If its pray is not in the same building, it flies out of the building, breaking the ceilling, to the sky. The owner's of the building repair the hole, so when the monster can not land so cannot return to the location. The street is however open enough for it to land and attack. Also when at a locatio, investigators are normally in a building so the fling monster cannot see inside.

Thst's my theme way flying monster only attack you if you're in the streets.

I like that.

To go back to my original thought the rulebook is wrong about Sky monsterssince it says, "If the flying monster is in a street area with no investigators and ther are no investigators in a connected street are, it moves to the Sky."

Reading the rules I can find no way for them to get out of a location unless there's an investigator next to them in the street. The FAQ changes this by way of a clarification question. As I said it really should be an errata.

The way I've always looked at it is that when a flying monster is in a location, it's easy to see how to get to the sky (a door, a window, or as in the case of the woods, straight up). However, once in the sky, it's difficult to see inside windows in the buildings, or between all the trees in the woods. Investigators in the streets or in Devil's Reef are essentially out in the open, making it easy for a flying monster to spot them. This explanation still holds for a flying monster moving into a street from a location or another street, but being unable to move from the street into a location.

Thanks for the clarification. However, I'd like to add a question of my own. Are flying monsters affected by their symbol for movement or they don't require the matching symbol on the Mythos card? That is, they move regardless of their symbol and follow the special rules quoted above?

They move only when their dimensional symbol appears on the Mythos card

And when a Gate Burst mythos card is drawn.

Does anyone house rule that flying monsters can enter locations without roofs? Like Independence Square and Wizard's Hill? I've thought about it, but it seems like a lot to keep track of.
