By JohnJBerthold, in Dark Heresy Gamemasters

I am thinking about how to incorperate material from the new Dark Eldar codex into Dark Heresy. Has anyone tried to do this yet? If so, what have you come up with?

And talking of Dark Eldar - how do they "feed"?

The codex tells us how they use the pain and suffering of others to replenish their souls that have been leached by She Who Thirsts, but it does not mention how.

It must be quite quick as they can feed in the middle of battles; also it must work at a distance other than point blank as crowds in the Wych arenas can be rejuvenated by revelling in the slaughter.

My personal guess is that although the physic powers of the Dark Eldar have not totally atrophied away but instead allow them to absorb the tormented life energies that are released in the suffering of their victims.

Thoughts anyone?

Don't think they actually feed on the battlefield, they take prisoners raider style and do the feed afterwards back in Commorah

No I don't think so.

In the new codex the Dark Eldar gain "pain tokens" for every unit they kill in battle, each token gives them access to new abilities. So as this represents the feeding I think it does happen on the battlefield.

True,

But they do take prisoners back to Commorah, at least that is in the fluff, I think the pain token represent that...

Well, lets first say that what is represented in the WH40k boardgame might not be equally representative in Dark Heresy. The fluff however, is.

It is clear that the dark eldar feed in the battlefield as well as in Commorragh. In the Dark Eldar codex, you have (in the timeline) a story about how a kabal placed an orc with their own spore virus in it, weakening all the orcs to the point the Kabal could just enter and massacre a whole world. Clearly it filled it's purpose for their leeching. As dark eldar can engage almost anywhere and anyone they wish, it is clear that they'd go for settlements or ships with little protection to do equal massacres, and have slaves as well for their return home.

I also heard from the creators of dark eldar in an interview, or read it, that entering the normal world for a raid, was like a feast for those that joined. Making them feed on all the fear and pain they inflicted in the raid itself.

Taking with them slaves have several purposes than just feeding on them. It is about the common things as well, like doing all the work for the dark eldar, just like slaves in the Roman empire. Also, they would feed on these slaves for their own purposes, what ever way they feel like.

I noticed an idea or houserule about dark eldar having to feed on others by killing someone every two days... which would be completely silly as a billion Dark Eldar would have to feed on 186,5 billion souls each year. And, the killing itself would just be a minor part of the feeding anyways, as it is more about the feelings/actions involved in the whole thing.

Also a nice thing to remember: In the webway, the dark eldar leaks less as it is a seperate place from the normal world as well as the warp.

The exact "How" they feed on their prey is unclear, but I guess that it has something to do with emotions/souls of some kind, psychic or not, that leaks. The only way they replenish this is by doing something that gives them excess of what they loose, and so they need to experience the most extremes of what they do, however they do it and whatever it is they do.

If it helps.

somewhere on DarkReign somebody tried something similiar and put up his "workings notes" up for download (up for download..this sounds...strange..)

Never had a look at it myself, put perhaps you want to check. At the moment, it is still on top of the "news pages".
