Q: Lurker at the threshold # of Gates

By player377182, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

The instructions for LatT say to replace all the Arkham Horror gates with the gates in the expansion.

But there are fewer total gate tokens (my Arkham Horror basic set has doubles for several locations and LatT only has one for each).

Is this deliberate to increase the game difficulty (i.e. gates are used up more quickly and investiators must spend them as trophies more often to stop the awkwaning?)

Thnx

Note that there are also a couple of split gate markers. These compensate for the smaller number of gates.

I'm guessing it's not to increase the difficulty, since defeat via running out gate markers is hard to achieve without some truly terrible luck.

With fewer gates however, the stack of gate markers is more manageable and easier to shuffle. This might've been the intent, since you have endless gates that you can't take as trophies and have to shuffle back into the stack upon closing. Which by the way makes running out of gates impossible. unless you deliberately remove the endless gates from play.

If I'm not mistaken, the only endless gate is the one to Yuggoth, so as long as it's one of the open gates, you can still run out.

I hadn't given it much thought, but with fewer gates, I guess it's slightly easier to affect the contents of the gate cup. It'd be impractical to try to corner the bad gate supply entirely, but, for example, one might want to hang on to the moving and devouring gate trophies so they don't get mixed back in.

Yep, this gives them the properties of monsters, so you'd be more selective when spending them as trophies.

Yep, you're right, there is only one endless gate, the one leading to Yuggoth, and it's definitely possible to run out of gate markers. In the latest game played (today, against Daoloth + Lurker), we almost had the AO awaken because of this issue. We won the game, with 2 gate markers in the stack. A nightmare. The stack isn't that big with the new gates... especially because you often have to close gates in street areas, giving you more trophies but no seals...

Can an investigator with John Legrasse take an Endless Gate as a trophy (I realize that by a strict reading of the card he can't, but it'd be interesting to see if FFG would want to change that).
