My First Tournament Deck

By Cuacuani, in Call of Cthulhu Deck Construction

Actually, that is a lie. This is the deck I played in my second Call of Cthulhu tournament ever (which was held on Halloween at Wheelers in St Neots). The deck I played in my first tournament was awful and lost every single game it played and I'm really embarrassed by it.

Anyway, this deck is Mono-Cthulhu with heavy emphasis on the Deep Ones. Here is the list:

3x Ravager from the Deep
3x Deep One Rising
3x Deep One Scout
3x Lord of Y’ha-nthlei
3x Adult Deep One
3x Backwater Deep One
1x •Cthulhu, Lord of R’lyeh
3x •Hydra, Mother of the Deep
1x •Julia Brown, Oddly Amphibious
3x Diseased Sewer Rats
3x Dreamlands Fanatic

3x Shadowed Reef
3x Deep One Assault
3x Sacrifical Offerings
3x Pulled Under
3x Touched by the Sleeper
3x Tcho-Tcho Talisman
2x Get if Off!
1x In an Unmarked Grave

The deck was thrown together at the last minute (I was working on a Dark Young deck that never really saw the light of play) and the general gist is pretty simple: play some Deep Ones, blow up anything you don't like the look of and if the Deep Ones die, fish (pun intended) them out of the bin with Hydra.

A few bits and pieces of interest:

Lord of Y'na-nthlei makes Deep One Scout much better - you now effectively only exhaust 1 Deep One to play another for free.

Hydra can help make times where Julia bins something decent less off an issue - you can always get any characters back.

Your opponent's face is priceless when you elect to go second and then manage to play a character for free in his first turn (Sacrifical Offerings + Dreamlands Fanatic).

Touched by the Sleeper and Tcho-Tcho Talisman are primarily in there to help get Pulled Under to work. However, Deep Ones have a bit of trouble with Terror struggles, so both Touched by the Sleeper and Tcho-Tcho Talisman can help stop them gibbering. Shadowed Reef is another obvious inclusion for getting past Terror struggles, but I've found that Shadowed Reef gets targeted with all the Support card hate my opponent can muster.

All in all, the deck did alright and was a lot of fun to play. I was the only guy there not playing with yellow cards and so didn't do very well (won 1 lost 2) but hey, I had fun and that's what counts, right?

Hi,

nice deck. I love the new cthulhu. Few things come to my mind:

Not enough characters. You should aim to a figure close to 30 characters.

Too many high cost characters. You will have a very slow start even with the fanatic and there are superfast decks out there that can lay 7- 8 characters with lenses in 2 rounds..Probably a mono cthulhu is hard to play right now, even thought some new cards looks very promising. Maybe a bi-faction with shub or syndicate is more solid.

Actually the number of characters is about right. It's just the average cost thats seems to me a bit high.

What is the finisher of your deck?

Amen! Having fun is the whole point of this thing!

You're right - it is quite a slow deck. It hasnt run into too many non-control decks, so I haven't seen how it copes, but I imagine it'll fall pretty easily to a weenie rush. It could probably do with some of the lower costing Cthulhu characters to help balance the curve, but I really wanted to just play as many Deep Ones as I could gran_risa.gif . I figured that there were two ways to go: 1 - take out some of the weaker Deep Ones (or the Deep Ones that require other Deep Ones to work well) for the Temptress and all the staple 1 and 2 cost green characters. Or 2 - stick to the Team Fishman plan and accept that I'll be playing catch-up most games because I'll struggle to defend the first story. Obviously, I took option 2 although I'm pretty sure that option 1 is the more sensible. If I were planning on cutting out the chaff and putting cheaper things in, then I think the Adult Deep One and the Deep One Scout are the two that are slightly less useful than the others.

Keep on playing (and replaying) characters with CCA that can be given T icons. Grind down your opponent winning Combat struggles and blowing up things they play and eventually win 3 stories. Hydra isn't quite powerful enough to be a game-winner (but then, if she had Invulnerability rather than Toughness +2, she'd be really powerful) and there aren't enough copies of Ol' Squidface to see him reliably turn up.

As you're only playing one Julia Oddly Amphibious, I'd rather consider adding 2 neutral Julia, in a way to benefit some investigation...

And I'm quite suprized you didn't consider Eye of the deep, which might be a great addition as a finisher. As you don't really need the tchotcho talisman (having Touched by the sleeper + other stuffs to give Terror), it might be a good idea to blank the text.

Nice idea, anyway !!!

I think you fixed your own problem of a finisher right there, since you're already running Squid Face throw in at least one more cut an Adult Deep One my brother runs a deck VERY similar to this and he always funs 2 Cthulhus for finishing.

I know it goes against theme but 2 Degenerate Cultists or Brood of Yigs could help out your early game and the terror difficulty, so you would only have to take out the remaining Adults to make room. My bro also uses them and they seem to do the job as well. If you like the cultists I recommend adding in Carl, he wins games!

Yeah just some criticism I hope you're deck starts kicking some Kingly ass, god knows something needs to.
