Looking for players for a chat based DH campaign

By XavierDantius32, in Dark Heresy Gamemasters

Hiya, I'm Xav

I live in an area where very little of this frankly awesome game is played. So I'm turning to the internet for solace

I'm looking for a group of three or so people who are up for a laugh and some gaming. I have all the books and I'm willing to GM if no-one else wants to

I'm thinking of running the games in a chatroom somewhere or possibly msn.

Knowing me, I won't check this very often, so if your interested, e-mail [email protected]

Here is one of the house rules I'd like included

Sorry, I think I'll not be interested in a campaign that introduces a new xenos race as slightly humanoid. This isn't Star Wars.

Kroot...working with the Inquisition? I suppose a radical Ordos Xenos Inquisitor might make use of them, but I think that'd be enough to get him declared a traitor to all Mankind...

A suggestion: So far, every online Icampaign I've tried to run has failed. Not becuase they were bad players, or they weren't interested, or I'm a bad GM. It's just that in any PnP game, there are delays as someone looks something up, decides what to do/say, etc, and while you can hurry things along, there's inevitably waiting involved. When everyone's there is person, that's all right. People chat with each other, joke, tell stories, eat snacks, read the rulebooks, that sort of thing. Online...people surf the web, or play game, ready a book, and they get sucked into what they're doing so that it's hard to build up momentum and KEEP it there. The ONLY online campaign that I've had luck with is an entire solo game: a single Scum, assisted by NPCs of my devising. It's worked very well so far, though I've known the player for years.

Voice is definitely key, so use Skype. And plan for long sessions or many multiple ones, even with Skype you'll find that what normally takes 5 hours takes 9 online.

Alright, all spots filled now. I'm not taking any more people

Bit late I know, but like you I run a fair number of games over the internet with old friends.

Some programs that may aid you in your campaign - and have aided me greatly in mine, are obsidian portal (www.obsidianportal.com) which does have a format to support dark heresy - its how I am going to run my campaign. Im not sure if we've really got it to work or not but we're trying to make a good way for the character sheets to show up all nicely formatted on the site - its still a work in progress however. Another good spot for a hub (which Ive also used before but not in conjunction with dark heresy) is guild portal (www.guildportal.com) - it is mostly geared to MMO's but given the way the site can work with its links to character sheets you can use it for more traditional tabletop games; I have used it for whitewolf nWoD.

For voice chat (Which is a bit of a must) skype is wonderful, and another great program is ventrillo however a downside there is the need to setup the server :( A final tool I make alot of use of for my online campaigns is rp tools (rptools.net) which contains a very wonderful map tool for when players are exploring pretty much whatever. I used to play and co-dm with a gal who has a good amount of artistic talent and with map tools you can upload the image as a background which is awesome for maps. However the tools well...their very awkward if your not used to them and it definitely takes a while to set up; as well as they are more geared to dnd 3.5 and pathfinder, so some modification are needed to make them work well. Just a few thoughts from someone who runs alot of online campaigns; they can be great especially for distance or if its odd times - but one thing to beware. Combat; it slows even 'optimized' rpg systems WAAAAAY down in my experiance with online play
