Permanent Criticals?

By Necrozius, in WFRP Rules Questions

Last session, one of the PCs was brought down to less than zero wounds, and he had accumulated three critical hit cards. His toughness is FOUR, which meant that he was still alive, just knocked out. It was an epic fight, and I kind of wanted the PC in question to be mildly scarred, either physically and/or emotionally from the event. The player is the kind who is totally cool with this.

My question is this: are there permanent criticals in this system? I could not find anything in the relevant section in the rulebook.

Or on a similar note, can there be any permanent Insanities from being practically killed?

If not, then I have to admit that for the very first time I'm becoming a bit nostalgic about 1st and 2nd edition, when some criticals had permanent consequences. Yeah I admit that on very rare occasions I'm a bit of a sadistic GM...

EDIT: It appears that I shall have to wait until Omens of War for this sort of thing. Curses.

Oh well, critical hits are supposed to linger for a while, yes?

Thank you Sunatet. Those are awesome.

While no official rule. It's pretty simple to solve it. Any effect can be made permanent, just write it down. You have a skull across your face, your missing a hand - whatever you want. For flavor sake just right down the description and ignore the negative effects. For more of a grueling game keep the negative effects as well. You want to attach more of a mechanic to it then you suffer them the most severe critical that you took. Note permanent critical effects don't apply towards your future chance of death from having to many crits.

Insanities work the same. Just don't cure the insanities that you have and keep playing them.

Well there's some good news and some bad news.

First the good news: Insanities can very well end up being permanent. The mechanics allow for things to cause fear and terror effects which can produce insanities that linger. You can say that a near-death experience like that can have a 3d Terror check with the Violence trait. This may very well cause insanities in characters that stick. Stacks of insanities are certainly one way to remove a character from play, and getting rid of a permanent one can take months of RP to remove (and probably not while on the road and battling demons etc).

The bad news: Permanent critical mechanics have been announced, and they're due out with Omens of War (Jan/Feb I believe). Meaning that while they will fully be integrated into the system, they currently aren't out - so you're stuck with some house rules and such for them till then.

Hope that helps.

Jay has announced it will be in the next Chaos God Supplement about Khorne with Permanent Impairment, mounted combat, great battles, etc...

Link to the announcement?
