I was wondering, in the 25+ years of fluff and a whole raft of Horus heresy novels, is the Emperor's name mentiond even once?

Nope, other than the strong implication in the novel Mechanicum that he is the basis of the Legend of Saint George and the Dragon, and the reality behind the historical Saint Georgius.
So ... maybe his name is George?

So probably Goge.
Wait a minute!
He was born in Anatolia what is now Turkey, so probably something Hittite I doubt though history know his name as for millenia he just worked in the background scheming and plotting. However in some fluff (I forget which, I think it was in Warrior Coven) its intimated that Fareer Eldrad Ulthran actully knew the his real name or one of them...
Theres also a rumour going round that the Emperor was infact Elvis Presley when he decided to take time out from steering mankind towards its psychic destiny. Or perhaps rock n Roll part of his great plan.
Everyone knows the Emperor's name was Bob. I mean, no other name is awesome enough for such a being as the Emperor of Mankind!
First Name: The
Last Name: Emperor
Sorry, couldn't help it
I think that he dose not have a real name. He was the reincarnated form of hundreds of shamens (my fluff may be out of date) who were not around afterwards to name him. He's a Client Eastwood type, "Man with no name" protecting and guiding mankind. And in a universe where a name can hold power over you, think how powerful a man is without one!
I second George. As in George S. Patton.
Athlete, fencer and marksman. Charismatic leader. Great tactical mind. Very fond of armor...
Used to talk about events hundreds of years in the past as he had been there. Believed he would keep fighting into the dark future. He called it reincarnation, but obviously he's really talking about taking on new identities, culminating in his role as Emperor of Mankind.
Through the travail of the ages,
Midst the pomp and toil of war,
Have I fought and strove and perished
Countless times upon this star
[...]
So as through a glass, and darkly
The age long strife I see
Where I fought in many guises,
Many names, but always me.
[...]
So forever in the future,
Shall I battle as of yore,
Dying to be born a fighter,
But to die again, once more
Aww for crying out.... It is Chuck Norris!
I'm pretty sure that in the earliest days of 40k there was a throw away bit of fluff that gave him a name but it was some very pedestrain english name like John Something or other. Needless to say, someone decided that was lame and its never been mentioned since.
The only mentions we do have is that the Emperor has been around supposedly since about 8000BC and has been through many lives. He'd thus has a vast collection of names, all of which are technically him.
As for his original birth name, dunno. He might not even have one.

Not to my knowledge, I think you're referring to the character John Grammaticus in the novel Legion. To the best of my knowledge the Emperor has never been named. Certainly not in the original 40K book.

Bob. It's Bob. The man spoke true.
Charismatic leader, staunch atheist with autocratic tendencies...
I wasn't thinking of John Grammaticus, something much more ancient than that.
On John Grammaticus though, Awesome. Sheer awesome. Must re-read Legion.

I concur. We can call this settled.
