Rule question regarding modifier & degrees of success

By ARISATO2, in Deathwatch

Greetings all, a quick question regarding modifier/bonus rules

Lets assume that my character is a tactical marine with BS of 60, with bolter mastery (+10 BS with bolter) ability, using a bolter. He fires bolter in full-auto (+20 BS) to a Hive Tyrant, a massive target (+30 to BS to hit). Adding all these up, the d100 dice roll result that he must be get to hit Tyrant would be 60+10+20+30 = 120, which is above the range of the dice. Is this possible, or the maximum bonus I can get is up to 100?

and if he could have bonus exceed 100, and rolled 03, what will his degrees of success would be?

Have a nice day!

There are other threads on this very topic. Key take aways from them is remember the max +60 modifier. Also, the consensus on the max modifier is that you truncate the bonuses AFTER they've been calculated (so if you have a +80 for some reason, then another -10, your bonus would be +70, then you reduce it to the cap of +60. NOT reduce to the cap of 60 then apply the -10). Once you have your cap of +60, you can still often get over 100.

The next thing to remember is the jam rule- I think it's 96-100 on single shot, or 94-100 on autofire. That means no matter how high your bonuses are, a roll of 96+ means you don't hit.

For Degrees of Success (often referred to as DoS), it's every full 10 points you pass the test by. So if you rolled a 22 and your skill was 50+40 from bonuses for a total of 90, you just got 6 DoS (90-22 = 68, discarde the ones and you have your full DoSs). If you rolled the 22 and his skill total was 120, you'd have 9 DoS.

Finally, when dealing with autofire, remember the maximum rate of fire of the weapon, unless firing with a heavy bolter or the lke, will often cap out well before your DoSs, especially with hordes.
