By Player Request - The Ability to Move, Shoot, Then Move Again

By Mystrunner, in Rogue Trader Gamemasters

Hello all,

I definitely ask a lot of questions... my players are coming up against a much more heavily armed cruiser in our next session, and their main advantage is speed. They're really wondering why they can't use a Maneuver to move half their speed, fire, and move half again... I don't think this is an unreasonable request, but it seems like it'd be a pretty hard maneuver to pull off... something requiring a Very Hard (-30) Piloting test, and possibly some sort of penalty to their BS test as well. What thinks you all?

Um. Come to New Heading? Flank Speed?

I was under the impression that all movement had to be taken before any other action was allowed? >_>;

Strictly speaking yes, but if you're of a mind to allow it the rules are already there. It's worth pointing out that Flank Speed's not a Maneuver Action though.

Actually, that ability does exist...it is an Eldar special ability in Lure of the Expanse.

Typically you can't do this in games because it allows for the 'unrealistic' scenario of moving, shooting, and then moving out of the way, thus giving your opponent literally ZERO chance of shooting at you. As in, he saw you pop out and shoot at him, and didn't even have the reaction time necessary to pull the trigger.

Hence why the Eldar ships have that ability, as well as some eldar and Tau units on tabletop. They can literally move so fast that you don't even get the chance to pull the trigger.

And that is why your ships can't do it. Either at the beginning of your movement, or the end, your opponent should have just as much chance to shoot at you as to did at them.

Either that or over watch can fire during your turn. (i.e. when you pop out the overwatch gets a free attack out of turn)

That's not the case, you need to take a maneuver action. You can take a shooting action, but you don't have to. You can shoot before you move.

Shooting Actions, p215.
After completing its Manoeuvre Action, a ship has the option of firing its weapons. Each Weapon Component may be fired once per Strategic Turn, and all Weapon Components must be fired at once, although they may be fired at different targets.

Whoops, forgot that was a house rule. It's been that way for so long.

Move Shoot Move is the Eldar game(breaking) mechanic in Battlefleet Gothic. I hate & dislike it very much.

I favour MMS. :)

There are mechanics for the Eldar I think already. Sorry they need an eldar ship to do it! ;)
