Here are the results for the Days of Ice and Fire Joust that Luke and I have been able to piece together from our memories, if we're off at all let us know. We did five rounds of swiss and a cut to top eight, all while GRRM was doing signings and readings and Q&A sessions in the FFG Event Center's main hall below the gaming area. And despite over a foot of snow by the day's end, we got 36 people for the main event (!), just five short of Worlds. We finished around midnight, with a 1.5 hour delay after round three when the FFG guys decided that we were playing too loudly for GRRM to do his evening readings. A fat lot of fun was had by all, and we convened to a sports bar after the tournament for drinks, more drinks, and semi-drunken merrymaking. (Who kept buying all those damned shots, anyway?)

After five rounds of swiss (36 people), the top eight looked like:

5-0: Erick Butzlaff (DC/finitesquarewell), Stark/Wildlings (apologies ahead of time for typing in the third person)

4-1: Luke Reed (IA/Maester LUke), Lanni/no agenda (the spare deck I had on me to lend him for the tournament, since Luke shows up to tournaments these days expecting that someone will conjure up a deck for him at the last minute lengua.gif)

4-1: Steve Kuennen (DC/TheMountainThatRides), Lanni/no agenda (same sauce, a few different cards)

4-1: Matt Ley (NE/rings), Martell/Wildlings

4-1: Josh Station (IL/Staton), Bara/Knights of the Realm

4-1: David B (MN/bergs206), Martell/Knights of the Hollow Hill

3-2: Jesse Schingen (WI/complord), Stark/no agenda (it had a lot of House Tully cards)

3-2: Casey Galvan (MI/?), Neutral House/Wildling (I don't have any details on the deck as I never saw it played, but I hear it was pretty crazy)

The top eight shook out like this:

Quarterfinal round: Erick beat Jesse, David beat Casey, Luke beat Steve, and Matt beat Josh

Semifinal round: Erick beat David, Luke beat Matt

Final round: Erick beat Luke

And so it was. I'm not sure on how the houses broke down, but I know that Targ and Greyjoy were severely underrepresented (1-2 Targ decks, 2-3 Greyjoy decks), and not too many Lanni decks either. It wouldn't surprise me if half the field was playing Baratheon, likely with Martell only a little ways behind.

Dobbler and Kennon both were playing a crazy Bara/Knights of the Hollow Hill Army/Knights deck that put gigantic out of house characters (Viper's Bannermen, King Joffrey's Guard, House Umber Berserkers) in and out of play with all sorts of events, but they both missed the cut by a few spots each at 3-2. Typical of the impressive creativity that the MO guys bring to deck building, for sure, and it wasn't something I wanted to have to figure out how to beat on the fly in the top eight (especially after the many drinks over our extended dinner break).

Awesome experience, and awesome to see all you guys in the off-season for a change. And I'll be placing my promo cards and the Greyjoy glass house card I picked up for a prize in the trading forum tomorrow. gui%C3%B1o.gif

Congrats Erick!!! ;-)

I'll contact you in skype to catch from you some suggestion... as always :-)

Yep, nice job!

We had a great tournament in western France at the same time, Stark/Wildings won the joust too (what a big surprise XD).

I have also few questions about Luke's Lanni mechanics, seems interesting as we had no Lanni deck at all for Joust.........

see you on mail/skype Erick

What a great event! Congratulations to Erick for his win.

Bara Knight and Martell are not a big surprise: a double lannister no agenda, for me, it is. I wonder how they were built.

Bye!

Diego

Congrats to Erick (again!) and everyone who went - we had a great time!

Just like Worlds (BTW, Worlds in the FFG-titles-it-that-way sense, not the 'it could beat Europeans' sense ~so don't flame me please) I made top 4 and then scrubbed out. I was actually excited to play Lanni (Luke) since I thought it was a good matchup with my deck. Then I had a crappy first hand, so mulliganed into...

1X Street of Steel

1X Orphan of Green

Woo-hoo! 1st turn Valar and I was holding Luke off a little (mainly with Lady Stoneheart) but he just kept winning unopposed challenges and I couldn't turn it quickly enough.

Makes me doubly mad since in the World Finals in 2008 that Luke won, where my deck scrubbed out as well. I still think I only would win the 2008 matchup with him 40% of the time, but I think I would have matched up well with this particular deck. Oh, well! I never expect to do well regardless, so it is always a nice surprise.

Anyways I can do a 2-second tourney report (remember, I am joking most of the time BTW):

Got in at 8.30pm with Jesse/Wyndwalker and Luke/Maester Luke on Friday, enough time to watch the...um...Melee or whatever crap people were playing ;) Just an aside - when the Melee doesn't count for overall champion, it gets <50% of the attendance of the Joust. Just saying... gui%C3%B1o.gif

Oh, there also was this really cool "Book of the White" or whatever banner that had all the World Champs names/cards on it...starting in 2007 otherwise it was just names on the bottom. So Casey (who was there, 2003 Champ) and I kept giving each other crap about our names on the bottom only because there wasn't room on the back.

Went out for drinks after looking through the promo bag and playing some fun games (mainly against Dobbler's crazy combo decks). That quickly showed me that Brotherhood ins't viable yet IMHO. And it gets totally owned by the suddenly good trait manipulation decks. Oh, and it was snowing really heavy by this point.

Went to the bar with Lord of Brewtown and Complord. I can't think of anyone else that went out - everyone takes the Joust more seriously than I do, or were too tired I guess gran_risa.gif Best part was the fact that ESPN Classic was showing 1980's professional wrestling. Everyone had mullets and weighed at least 350 pounds...a far cry from these days of roided out athlete-types. Plus, a Soviet Guy was teaming up with a Middle Eastern guy to try and beat up the USA-champion of course (got to love the xenophobia of the 80's to remind ourselves that we ARE moving forward a little).

Got up the next day ready to decide between Martell Wildlings (a slightly varied version of my 4th place Worlds deck) and Lanni lots-of-good cards deck (~trademark on that name). I really wanted to make the Lanni deck Lanni knights instead (hey, dance with what brought you - Lanni Knights won 2006 Worlds for me) but didn't get to it in time. Probably a good thing since Knight decks were heavily over-represented. So, Martell Wildlings it was!

Here we go! Again, I apologize about name/mis-spellings/details/etc. I am horrible with those things.

Round 1 - Malesh GJ.

Malesh has been playing forever, and always bring (that I remember) a tight GJ deck. I had a pretty good start, and Venom Blade was hurting him bad, making him burn his Iron Mines. I got Val out with a dupe or two, and just kept hitting decent cards. I stole one Winter Marauder, Milked another. It was decently close, but I always was a 1/2 step ahead of him. 1-0.

Round 2 - Casey Neutral House.

Great. Casey and I got paired at Worlds early too! He had a crazy neutral Wildlings deck, with some trait manipulation other other stuff. It went back and forth a bit, until I got rid of his Birds which were hurting me (you can't save against shuffling back into deck BTW). But overall I had good board position, and Blade was doing good work again. 2-0

Round 3 - Um...? Someone help me out here? Erick now or Round 4? I think I was 3-0 when I played him? So...3-0 against a player that will be named later.

**I think we are forced to leave at this point - many of us go to Chili's and take over their bar. The first shots of the night are bought, and the beers were ALL 2-for-1. Not a good combo. ~Unless you are drinking fruity mango drinks like Wyndwalker.**

Round 4 - Erick Stark Wildlings after listening to GRRM talk about the HBO series

We both had decent but not amazing starts. His Jayne Westerling (name?) killed me here, probably searching out copies of 3-4 kings (Robb and Mance) before finally dying (I didn't get a Blade). Those dups really helped him keep good board position. I was never out of it, but he was always a bit ahead. Finally he got dominance with +3 power plot and hit 19 to my 7-8 maybe. I remember not drawing any events this game either - always had a hand full of characters. Great deck and player as always. 3-1.

Round 5 - Paul from MO, Bara Knights

This game in a nutshell. I flip Beric + location. He flips three weenies plus a location. I first turn Fury plot (which will send a character to his hand), he first turns...Marched to the Wall! I smile. He looks confused. He asks me to discard Beric. I refuse, based on his text. lengua.gif It went downhill from there for him, espeically after I have more knights than him by the 2nd turn. Paul is a great guy, and actually bought as many shots for people as I did this weekend. We had a good time talking about this over and over again. happy.gif

Ended up 4-1 and in the top 8.

Top 8 - Stanton Bara Knights

He won't agree, but he actually had a pretty good start (probably up to 8 power in two turns). I flopped 5, which as most people know is a rarity for me (I hate locations, so usually flop 3-4). Probably used all my Kharma. I milk one of his big renown guys. Kill a few between Winter and high claim and Blade. I get more knights than him by the 3rd turn and walk from there. He was a little frustrated, but a good showing. 5-1

As usual I win in 10 minutes and have to wait an hour for Luke to finish his game. Better than 2008 when I won Top 8 and Top 4 in 35 minutes and it took him 3.5 hours to win his two. sonrojado.gif

Top 4 - Luke w/ Lanni.

See above. Grrr... As most people know, I don't mind losing (like to Erick in this tourney, especially when he doesn't traitor me to death), but I hate losing to weird things like horrible flops (I haven't had that bad of a flop EVER) and silly cards like traitors or Price's Loyalists (for you old timers). Plus, having 9 events of my first 15 cards was stupid (I run 15 total), especially when two more were Milks. Oh well, I never mind losing to Luke. 5-2.

We wait around to see Erick win, and then head off to the bar again. It was a huge bar, and we were 75% of the people there (probably 20-25 of us). I think between Paul and me we bought 4 rounds of shots? Including two of Chocolate Cake in honor of Professor AJ. I drunk texted about 10 players as well (and my wife...I think). We even got Dobbler to have 3 or 4 drinks!!! After having a great time, we are kicked out at closing time and have a snowball fight with some random chick outside. I don't feel very good the next day.

Sunday just got more stuff signed by GRRM, and play some fun games with my now built Lanni Knights deck vs. Casey and Malesh. Made it to Nebraska in 5.5 hours - not bad at all!

Thanks to Nate, Dormouse, and FFG for putting on a great event!!!

Thanks to GRRM for the books, and for signing all my cards I brought to the table!

Thx rings for the report. At the end AGOt is a card game so luck matters in the sense that there are cases that a 50% - 50% game is decided by draw.

In my very short experience I had 2 great tourney... I faced a similar flop in nationals semifinals. Had 9 events in the deck adn after mulligan I had 5 in hand :-(

On the opposite hand at Staleck in final matches I had always great flot... so... hope next time you are gonna have "your weapons" in hand to defend your battlefield!!!

I always told that in finals game should be better have "at best of 3" matches but I know times would be unmanageble ;-)

Congrats to Erick, for his luck and skill to achieve this victory!

I am curious did GRRM have a chance play a game with the fans? If so what house did he play?

He isn't into card games, I think he tried it once Eric Lang told me.

He asked me about the Brotherhood cards I was having him sign though, espeically Ghost of High Heart!

Also, I asked him to go to the bar after the tourney, but he declined (I have heard he many times does at the smaller cons).

it appears that bergs206 is the forums name for the david b that made the top 8, not king bilth. what's that URL manipulation trick for editing posts after the edit button has disappeared?

Congrats on the victory, Erick, and nice report (you too rings!). Sounds like everyone had a lot of fun!

If I remember correctly copy link from report to moderator and change reportar for editar.

Hey guys, Casey and I were able to make the 12-13 hour drive back home ok.

I didn't do as well as I would have liked but that's ok as I still had a great time. I lost my first and second games to rings (as he already noted above and got kicked to the downstairs area) and some guy whose name I can't remember (sorry about that I'm bad with names). Both were Martell and the blades were kicking my ass.

Then I finally won a game and earned myself a spot upstairs again. (saving my street cred) I can't remember this guy’s name either but he was a new player and a nice guy. I sure he'll be far more competitive once he gets a few more games under his belt and gets some card knowledge.

Then we had a big break at Chili's. I'd like to mention the 2 for 1 beer specials again because I took of advantage of that.

By the time I got back I was real happy and played the third game against Jared (I’m pretty sure that was his name). At this point I was 95% sure top 8 wasn't going to happen for me that day so we both goofed around a bit that game but I ended up winning.

My final game was against Jesse Wyndwalker. Apparently there were 3 Jesses there that day and one was even a girl. Anyway I won that game even though he was totally cheating all time =P

I ended up 3-2 and around 12 or 13 place overall for the day I think. Could be wrong on that last part.

Then came the best part of the night as a good number of us went to the bar. I remember most of it and it was all good. Hope to see you guys soon and a special thank you to all those guys who shelled out that cash for the group shots. Love you guys the most.

It takes quite a long time for me to review the whole page.

I feel happy to know the game is so popular in US.

As a big fan of Ice and Fire, Hope we can have such kind of Events in Asia.

Congrats Erick! Way to Rep Stark at a big tourney and bring home the W for them. I'm glad it wasn't a Lannister deck that won. lengua.gif

@ Rings: Great tourney report as usual, and I can verify the drunk texting. I have proof on my phone haha.

I was rings 3rd round opponent.

THAT is right! Thanks! I had more memories of drinking w/ you that overshadowed the gaming memories lengua.gif

I can't wait until GenCon. I intend to lose with as much grace as humanly possible.

Hahaha, really wish I had the ability to "like" that as per Facebook.

Sounds like it was a blast - congrats to the winner! I'm looking forward to making the trek out to Gencon one day.

Indeed, we were few and far between. I ended up going 3-2 with a Greyjoy Wildlings deck. My other choice was Targ Wildlings, but having only played this game since August I noticed that I was making more play errors with Targ than with Greyjoy. So I went with the simpler deck, even though my heart belongs to control, and had a good time with it. All of my opponents were very gracious and pleasant to play against.

Thank you to everyone who played, and thank you to the FFG people for having us.

hey guys, thanks for all the props -- my tournament decks are never built in a vacuum, and i tend to get a good few test games in beforehand, so i'd like to give a quick shout-out to everyone who helped me test for the november tournament season:

jonathan/longclaw, andrea/gualdo, anthony/fatmouse, paul/redterr0r, diego/dondiego, and, as always, the esteemed (if occasionally n00bish) members of the DC meta: corey, steve, and the second coming of dan

~greg always says that the best way to prevent anyone from doing well in a tournament is to stop that person from playtesting ahead of time, so now you know who to tar and feather when i manage to win another event lengua.gif
