Anyone interested in playing online?

By Illustrious, in Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay

Alas my gaming group here in Salisbury, UK, isn't really up for WHFP (at least not in the near future). On the D6Generation podcast I heard them talking about playing RPGs online. I got to thinking about it, and really there's no reason why a group of people from across the globe couldn't play together via a chatroom or something similar. Every player would have to have a set of stuff since the GM couldn't provide it, but I assume that everyone on the forums has one anyway.

So, anyone interested? If you are, shoot me an e-mail at jamesstewartjones @ googlemail.com

I'd love to give it a go. I'll shoot you a message.

If you are interested in playing online, i'd suggest checking out MapTools to help facilitate the game, models, dice, etc. I've made a bunch of resources and adventures for WFRP3 already.

Gitzman

I'm up for it. I'll email you.

Gitz and I have both run 2e games on Maptool and his new platform needs us desperately to test it! :)

Jay H

are you implying that my platform is in dire need of testing or that we are desperate to try it out? =)

G

Both. I think it needs a corruption component. The longer one goes without playing, the more corruption points his character gets ;)

I'm perfectly happy to use this set up, although it looks very confusing. Perhaps one of you who understands how it works could volunteer to be GM? I suggest that we all gen new characters for this game, and then send our character stats and bios to the GM. I don't have Signs of Faith (yet), but I have all of the other expansions.

Is tomorrow evening too soon for y'all? Living at home does mean I have more spare time than usual.

Also, I only got e-mails from two of you (no idea who is the hold out). When I get the last one we can take this discussion off the boards.

I would be interested to give it a try, i never played "online" though (mail or thru maptools).

My main concern right now is that i'm headed to LA tomorrow, for a week, and won't be able to follow forums, etc.

If you can wait a week, i'm game if you'd have me gran_risa.gif

Hey Cwell - shoot me an e-mail and we'll talk about details.

If Jesse's on, we could co-GM the demo just to get used to the platform. I'd be happy to GM once I've re-familiarized myself with it all.

I'd also like to get a GM's guide and players guide for WFRP3 maptool out there. Moving your character around the map, initiative, and the like are not the hard part. I think just getting a system down for what get's tracked on your character token/mini and what you've got to track at home (via paper) is what just needs some practice.

There were some specific things that we had tested out that will simply run better with some common sense: movement is 30' per maneuver, initiative will show a player who's up and he can just volunteer to let someone else go, etc. A bunch of reprogramming just isn' t necessary there.

Afterall, Jesse's already done all the leg work for the scenarios :)

I figure I'd post the basic Technical start-up here:

Step 1: Download and extract Maptool (version b76): www.rptools.net/index.php

Step 2: Join the WFRP Maptool game scheduling and discussion board (moderated by me): forums.rptools.net/viewforum.php

Step 3: Download and extract A Day Late, a Shilling Short campaign file from Gitzman's Maptool Campaign Platforms: www.gitzmansgallery.com/MapTools_WFRP/index.html

Step 4: Open Maptool and set your Launcher settings to: Max 1024, Min 256, Stack 6

Step 5: In the menu bar, click File > Open Campaign. Then find your downloads folder and open the "A Day Late, A Shilling Short" .cmpgn file.

Step 6: Make sure the dice roller window is open and test it out. Notice that the results come up in a nice table in the chat window.

Step 7: Click on the blue globe in the upper right hand corner and change the map view to: Forest Trail. Notice the location cards and characters.

Step 8: Zoom in / out of the map by hitting the - or + keys

Step 9: Move your central view of the map by right clicking and dragging the map

Step 10: Move a character token by left clicking on it and dragging it. Notice it tells you your movement in 5' increments. We use 30' per maneuver and "engaged" means in contact with a figure. Just like in a regular game, you only move your character during your turn.

Step 11: Left double click on a token to see details inside of it. Your GM will set these details so don't mess with them.

Step 12: For the other tutorials, click on the HELP tab on the menu bar. You'll see a tab that reads tutorials.

Step 13: The GM will set up all the other stuff, but you cannot break it, just do NOT save the campaign when you close if you change anything.

That's the gist of it for the player. Getting logged into a game, using macros to apply damage, and all the other stuff get's explained as you go (and I'll have more on this later).

If any of you have any questions on how to use the basics, let me or Gitzman know. We would love to meet up and game with any of you (ok, most of you), online ;)

I have all that working fine, Jay. I've started an e-mail chain/list thingy that we can use to sort out the details between us all, rather than clogging up the FFG forums with our banter.

Anyone else who is interested, feel free to shoot me an e-mail or post here on the thread. I assume (and hope!) that the party will grow over time.

Having played around with the system a little bit, I like it a lot. The only thing I would say is that the "CHAOS TINKERS WITH YOUR ACTION" message is unnecessary and means that the chat window has to be a little larger than works on my screen. It's a good idea, but I don't think it adds anything. Ideally the chat window and the dice window are going to be as small as possible, and so anything not necessary should be cast aside.

Update: We're doing the training demo this Sunday, the 14th at 3pm MST (GMT -7). We've got room for 1-2 more if anyone is interested.

E,

We could always post the connection information (vent/Skype and the MapTools room/password) for those who want to listen in or watch. Could be useful for those who want to use or check out MapTools or learn how to play online.

Game on!

Gitz

Speaking of... do you have a Ventrillo server available? Otherwise we're using skype. Does skype have a group-function?

jh

The answer is yes and yes (i think). Skype should have some sort of conference call function. But i have access to a few vent servers we could use too. Let me get back to you on that one. I have a few i'm part of and i bet we could use a channel.

Gitz

P.S. you know, im surprised we have not gotten more people interested.

Good luck with this!!!

Ive ran a dark heresy and am currently a rogue trader campaign using maptool and I must say that it is very good.

Im currently using skype and generally dont have many problems but rarely the quality might down, not enough to stop the game but enough to notice.

Vent when we tried it was good but more complicated and demanding on the internet connection so was ditched in the end.

Im very tempted to try and get in on this game but have a few things ongoinjg that might get in the way of playing.

Glad to hear it! E and I ran a WFRP2 series of games about a year and a half ago on MapTools using the WFRP2 ruleset i developed (with some help from the community at rptools.net). We probably ran about 12 or 15 sessions and had a great time.

We are looking forward to using the new system i built which is much more robust than the previous one with a lot more attention to visuals and user interface design. Not to toot my own horn, but the maps i've been working on are a hell of a lot better too.

Cant wait for Sunday. We'll do more sessions if things go well that anybody can in on or participate.

Game on!

Gitzman

P.S. My google maps version of the Super Huge Detailed Warhammer Map is almost complete. Check the maps page at Gitzmans Gallery soon!

Let's use Skype then. I've just not used it in a while. We used Vent' for our 2e games..back in the day. BTW, my wife informed me that our lunch might go a little over, so I'll have you boot up the campaign and i"ll log in as a GM and run it.

I think if we had one or two more people involved, that would be better for the training. I'll spam RPG.net and Enworld.com and look for nibblers there.

WFRP doesn't have a huge following like other games, so I'm not expecting a tidal wave, but a couple more would be nice for a 2 hour one-shot game ;)

jh

p.s. I'm making notes like I did last time on some things that we can refine (e.g. terminology in results exhausted should say exerted, etc.) But I'll leave it for after the first game. I've also got to figure out an efficient tracking mechanism for beasties..probably just a post-it note in the page like I do on FTF games.

If your after an extra bod for a couple hours I could turn up and give it a whirl.

If its 2200 GMT and you plan on running for a couple hours that should be okay with me.

Then if you do plan on running this abit more I can see if I can make the rest.

Edit - Gitzman, I just looked at the campaign file and it looks really good.

If there's room I'll jump in.

I'm having trouble getting the dicebox window to show up. Any tips? Did I miss something?

Lets resolve the technical issues when we all hop on the server. we'll run a tutorial for everyone and how to operate the system.

E, i am confused, do you want me to host the game and you GM? If you are going to be a little late thats cool with me cuz i can get it up and get people in, then you show up when we are ready.

We need to distribute our Skype names today and get everyone in the email chain so we know where to go tomorrow. Look to the email address at the begining of this thread for contact info to join the chain.

Gitz, Yes. You host. I'll GM.

Distribute the skype names through the email chain. We can set up a group call via skype. >contacts >create new group.

BIG NOTE: I'm running on b76. Make sure yours and everyone else is updated to b76.

Jay H

All,

I sent an email to the address at the start of the thread but havent heard back, does that mean you dont need me? If you dont its not a problem.

Cheers

Edit - I just got an email.
