Stark Weenie

By Integrity, in 4. AGoT Deck Construction

My girlfriend and I recently started playing AGoT LCG. We currently only have the core set, but wanted to go ahead and plan ahead on what decks we wanted to build so that we'd know what to buy first. She's very fond of Stark, so I felt this would be a good deck for her. I built it with Hungry Mob in mind, which is why Winterfell Castle is the only 3 cost card, which can be tutored for on turn one with Building Seasons in order to minimize conflict. The low number of lands makes Fleeing to the Wall always a strong and viable play, while the multitude of wolves, combined with the tutoring of the Winterfell Kennel, and the Stealth granted by Wolfswood, helps both the deck, and makes Kennel Master huge.

I think the deck is fairly straightforward and self explanatory for the most part, and I wanted some input from people who have been playing longer than I have before I attempt to try and build this. Any input is welcome. Thank you for your time.

Characters:

3x Hungry Mob (King's Landing)
3x Bolton Refugee (A Time of Ravens)
3x Kennel Master (Core Set)
3x Wolf Pack (Lords of Winter)
3x The Bastard's Elite (Brotherhood Without Banners)
3x Peasant Defenders (King's Landing)
1x Hodor (Core Set)
3x The Flayed Men (Brotherhood without Banners)
3x Direwolf Pup (Core Set)
2x House Tully Recruiter (Core Set)
1x Osha (Defenders of the North)
3x Wolf Herald (A Clash of Arms)
1x Sansa Stark (Corse Set)
1x Lady (Core Set)

1x Grey Wind (Lords of Winter)
1x Nymeria (Core Set)
1x Crown of Winter (Lords of Winter)
2x The Long Winter (A Time of Ravens)
1x Summer (Core Set)

Locations:

1x Winterfell Kennels (Core Set)
1x Lord Eddard's Chambers (Core Set)
1x Wolfswood (Lords of Winter)
1x Winterfell Castle (Core Set)

1x Valar Morghulis (Core Set)
1x Fleeing to the Wall (Core Set)
1x Building Season (Core Set)
1x Power and Wealth (Core Set)
1x Fury of the Wolf (A Clash of Arms)
1x Winter Festival (Defenders of the North)
1x After the Mummer's Ford (Kings of the Sea)

The thing about Hungry Mob is it is ONE card in your deck. You should not build your deck around i - if your mob is knelt, so what? t! In any case, it should be possible to keep all costs under 3 through the use of reducers like Godswood/Northern Fiefdoms - which would be vital for a functioning economy.

Characters:

Lots of Miltiary. Not much of anything else. The boltons are very unreliable and you don't have Abandoned Forts to pick them back up when they turn against you, so you'll find they'll come back to bite you.

You need more uniques and more draw! Some cards you definitely would want to look at are Guard at Riverrun and the Blackfish. You might also want to in Catelyn and some other intrigue/power to help you defend. Get important characters and a couple of dupes for them.

Locations:

You don't have nearly enough direwolves to really make Wolfswood worthwile. And you need discount locations, otherwise your characters would be prohibitively expensive. Street of Steel/Great Keep/Godswood/Northern Fiefdoms are a must in a stark deck.

Attachments:

Way too many. Some of them are of very doubtful value - The caches I find are too weak to be worth playing. Furthermore, you'll be putting most of these attachments on weenies - which are generally killed for claim anyway, so you'll find that you don't really get to use them. Crown of Winter doesn't belong in a deck that doesn't revolve around a key character.

Plots:

As a general rule of thumb, Stark does not play Valar in his plot deck. Stark is too good at killing everyone else. Building season isn't that useful for you becasue you're only running 4 locations, none of which are stellar. After the Mummer's ford is distinctly inferior to Storm of Swords

Characters:

3x Wolf Herald (A Clash of Arms)

1x Hodor (Core Set)
3x Guard at Riverrun (Lords of Winter)
1x Jory Cassel (A Clash of Arms)
2x Catelyn Stark (King's Landing)
3x Samwell Tarly (A Time of Ravens)
3x Carrion Bird (A Time of Ravens)
2x The Blackfish (Lords of Winter)
2x Robb Stark (Core Set)
2x Eddard Stark (Lords of Winter)
3x Hungry Mob (Kings Landing)
3x Bolton Refugee (A Time of Ravens)
1x Arya Stark (King's Landing)
1x Ranger of Winter (A Time of Ravens)
1x Shaggydog (Core Set)
1x Benjen Stark (Core Set)
Events:
2x Lethal Counterattack (Core Set)
3x Winter is Coming (Core Set)
3x To Be a Wolf (A Clash of Arms)
3x Endless Endurance (Lords of Winter)
Attachments:
1x The Long Winter (A Time of Ravens)
3x White Raven (A Time of Ravens)
1x Crown of Winter (Lords of Winter)
Locations:
1x Lord Eddard's Chambers (Core Set)
3x Frozen Moat (Defenders of the North)
3x Godswood (Lords of Winter)
1x Winterfell Castle (Core Set)
1x Street of Steel (Core Set)
3x Northern Fiefdoms (Core Set)
Plots:
1x Battle of Oxcross (Princes of the Sun)
1x The Minstrel's Muse (Defenders of the North)
1x The Winds of Winter (A Time of Ravens)
1x A Time for Ravens (A Time of Ravens)
1x Fury of the Wolf (A Clash of Arms)
1x Storm of Swords (Defenders of the North)
1x After the Mummer's Ford (Kings of the Sea)

Thanks for the suggestions. They really helped. I've done some major adjusting, and am wondering if this is better than my first attempt, and what I can still improve.

I disagree.

Should I readd it then? - or is the updated deck good as it is? What can I do to improve it?

I appreciate all the suggestions. I'm trying to learn, every piece of advice helps.

1x Shaggydog (Core Set)
1x Benjen Stark (Core Set)
I would not be using 3 Samwell Tarly especially since you are just using him for draw. May I also suggest the LoW Robb Stark for higher str and renown. The extra kill is nice but you could incorporate the Grey Wind attachment for about the same effect. I also suggest a different Catelyn since you only have 1 Shadow card in this deck. I like the core set version. Or use more shadow cards like Varys, Maester's Malleon's Tome, Syrio, King's Landing, Red Keep, Ser Mandon Moore, Pyromancer's Apprentice, and Silent Sisters. And if you are using more Shadow cards, then Littlefinger from KL would be good too. I would also suggest more Rangers.

I love all these events. I am just not sure if 3 Endless Endurances are necessary but personal preference. I would also think about adding in Bound by Duty to help with power grab and Feigned Retreat for surprise wins.

I would think about adding Grey Wind and Shaggydog attachments and Maester Malleon's Tome. I love when I can place it on the Blackfish and have him attack and defend any challenge. And Bodyguard for more saves.

Solid and all useful. Tower of the Hand if you start using more Shadow cards. Narrow Sea is always a solid card too. Free influence or reducer.

You need a clear all plot in case the deck is not working or your opponent is moving too fast. I love Valar Morghulis for the surprise and you can save your people. I also like Winter Festival for power grab and good gold.
All in all this deck should be something fun and interesting. Since you say it is for your girlfriend then the two of you should build it together. And that means you need to listen to her. If she likes the Boltons, then work with that.

lol, unlike me, she can't stand doing research. She honestly didn't like the first deck, and this was a step in the right direction. I was informed you always run Sam as a 3 of, but they/I might have been misinformed. I'd rather just use more Shadow cards considering that Catelyn's ability is just too useful to ignore. I would have thought the same myself, regarding the rangers, but I picked up another piece of misinformation concerning them that I didn't understand, but followed until I heard otherwise.

I thank you for the advice/help, and fully intend to make efforts to incorporate what I can/want to. As for her, she's not a "combo player", and doesn't like too many complicated game mechanics that she has to remember. The whole reason she seems to like Stark is that it is powerful, and doesn't require her to think too hard about if she's playing her cards wrong.

When I have time I'll make and post the changes to the deck. Thank you again for your suggestions.

I disagree also. Valar is a must in all decks. It is like Wrath of God or Damnation in Magic:The Gathering.

I thought the same thing, at first, followed the advice I got there after, and keep learning. The great thing about these deck experiences is that I'll continue to learn as I continue to remake them.

Thank you all for your help and suggestions.

1x Fury of the Wolf (A Clash of Arms)
1x Storm of Swords (Defenders of the North)
1x After the Mummer's Ford (Kings of the Sea)
I decided to take out the Winter in favor of a stronger deck. The Crown of Winter is still there for cards like Arya Stark, but rather than focusing on trying to maintain winter, the deck can make it winter, and even runs a plot to help benefit from an opponent who gets smug at making it summer.
As always, I'm always looking for help and advice, and I thank everyone who helped me as I continue to build and re-build this deck.

It really depends if you want just deck to have fun or tournament deck. You can't rely on 1 card (you may never see it), so Crown of Winter can make it winter and combo with other cards, but how often? 10% of games? 5%?

That means 2x Catelyn Stark (King's Landing) is not good choice. LoW version is amazing for any deck.

Maester Malleon's Tome, Tower of the Hand - dead cards, see above.

Red Keep - why did you take it?

What you really need is few games with good Lanni deck - it will learn you quickly how efficient is your deck gui%C3%B1o.gif

I honestly had forgotten that Catelyn needed winter. That changes everything. Thank you for pointing that out... *sigh* This means I have to reimplement winter.

1x After the Mummer's Ford (Kings of the Sea)

I know I need Ranger(s) of Winter, but I don't know where to get the numbers, and I will not go above 60.

My basic approach to deck building is 50% characters, 25% income, and 25% support cards. I also rarely have a deck that is right at 60 cards. Normally I am around 64. It is not too much more and I find that the extra cards are helpful.

1x A Song of Summer (A Time of Ravens)
1x Fury of the Wolf (A Clash of Arms)
1x Storm of Swords (Defenders of the North)
1x After the Mummer's Ford (Kings of the Sea)

Just noticed/remembered I was still running Red Keep/King's Landing. Though that drops me two Shadow cards, I think the added Rangers are worth it.

So you want to play winter, ok, but is that mean you don't play Kings of Winter?

Should I play Kings of Winter?

Why not? This agenda has powerful effect and no real drawback.

I wanted to thank you all again for helping me with this deck. It wouldn't be half of what it is now if not for all of your help and advice. Thank you.

I think it's good deck for beginning. Now you must play a lot and learn by yourself what's going on on table (especially vs Lanni gui%C3%B1o.gif ) .

I would throw out After the Mummer's Ford - it can hurt you if opponent is going first. Also if you have Guards at Riverrun, then it works against you. There are plenty useful plots. Consider taking The Winds of Winter - effect is the same: 2 killed characters, but you have to kneel less characters (sometimes you can't attack anyway, so second attack would be wasted). Additionaly -1 STR to opponent's characters is pretty good. If you care about high initiative, then Winter Festival might be good option.

Thanks again. I went with the Winter Festival because I knew she'd like it better than The Winds of Winter. I'll be keeping Storm of Swords for now, but I'll suggest The Winds of Winter to her, and see which she likes better.
Thank you for the help, I'd still be at that first deck post w/o the tremendous amount of help you've all given.
