Best Quality Macro-Batteries?

By donte2, in Rogue Trader Gamemasters

Ok, so I am sure everybody is aware of what Good/Best quality does for normal weapons. Never Jam, Added Damage, bonus to hit. But while sifting through the core book I cam across something that made the gears in my head start grinding for what it could be. While the core book was giving an example of how to buy ship components and how to add modifiers. It gave the Example of Upgrading Common Macro-Batteries to a Good quality, with the resulting Mod of -40.

But I have been as of yet unable to find anything to support what a even a Poor quality Shipboard weapon would do let alone Good and Best.

I was thinking of for Macro-Batteries, A Poor quality would give 1 less over all damage, Maybe 2 to reflect on one or more of the guns not operating at all. Also lowering the Str or range would not be out of line.

Good Quality I would see giving a bonus to Ballistic most likely around a +3 or +5, Maybe upping the range by 1, and maybe damage by one. Or lowering the crit by 1.

Best Quality could be something like a +10 to Ballistic, and maybe 2 to range and Damage, with a 1 lower crit.

Lance Weapons are a bit more though. Havent really thought about it, but Was thinking messing with power, range, and damage/crit. What do you guys think? Have you thought about this at all? Or am I just blind and missed a section about better than common Ship components.

Have a look at 'Into the Storm' which covers upgrading batteries to Turbobatteries of good and best quality.

It is strange that some of the new add-ons to components have details Poor/Good/Best versions, but there are none for the basic components themselves. Yet it does seem to suggest that components can be bought in these different qualities. I've ignored this for now, hoping that it will be covered in a future supplement - Battlefleet Koronus, perhaps?

I hope so, yet another thing that I came across though is easily thought up on the fly is in Lure of the Expanse, one of the items (More specific tech) is an Auto Loader for Macrocannons. No stats, but you can get the tech to use them. Further thoughts?

Um, everything in there tells you what the Common quality does, and then describes Poor , Good and Best qualities. For example, the Turbo-weapon Batteries negate the penalty for firing beyond base range up to their maximum of double published. The next paragraph in their description explains what Poor , Good and then Best quality does. Laid out simply we have the following:

  • Poor - negates the penalty for firing a ships macrobatteries out to double range, but reduces base range by -1.
  • Common- negates the penalty for firing a ships macrobatteries out to double range.
  • Good - negates the penalty for firing a ships macrobatteries out to double range, increases base range by +1.
  • Best - negates the penalty for firing a ships macrobatteries out to double range, increases base range by +1, provides a +5 bonus to BS when firing the upgraded macrobatteries.

Each item and upgrade is described in the same format; description of the Common quality workings first, and then other qualities described in the following paragraph.

Also note, Lance weapons and batteries are not macrobatteries, and therefore should not be allowed to be upgrade in such a way. Hope that helps some.

Unless listed in the book, or houseruled by the GM, various quality ratings for ship components have no real effect on gameplay mechanics. They are mostly a roleplaying element. When RT first came out this question (quality of ship components) came out and the resulting answer was visual appeal, and possibly interaction bonuses or penalties. A Poor quality armored prow is haphazardly bolted and possibly rusty/using old parts. A Best quality is finely engraved, with liturgies to the Emperor and iconography, etc. The Poor quality armored prow doesn't work any less effectively than the best quality one, but other RTs might not take the owner seriously or believe that the owner is in financial trouble, and might reduce the impact that threats or intimidation the RT make. The Best quality prow is a thing of beauty, and would awe his foes and possibly gain bonuses dealing with the Ecclesiarchy. Etc.

The same applies to the ship weapons and their quality, unless something specific is given for them (such as the Turbo weapons) they have no official operational impact.
