RTL: OL spells during outdoor encounters

By SanJin, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

Some spells text tells that spell affects player or any player in dungeon. Could those spells affect players during battle with lieutenants?

It would help if you gave specifics, preferably including the actual text of the cards in question.

Answers would most likely be on a case by case basis, rather than 'general'.

Dark Charm and Animated Weapon. Also the spell that convert whole party to monkeys.

All of them tells that the objects of spell should be in dangeon, but spells created before outdoor events so rool can be ignored.

I'll double check the text when I get home, but I can't think of a reason why you couldn't use those in an outdoor encounter, especially Dark Charm and Animate Weapons. Curse of the Monkey God is the result of opening a chest (I think), so that one shouldn't be an issue since I can't think of a time when you see a chest in an outdoor encounter.

I think he means Dance, not Curse of the Monkey God. Both Dance and Animate Weapons (I think) say "all heroes in the dungeon...", so if reading this literally it would be illegal to play them since an outdoor encounter is not really a dungeon.

I see it this way: These cards were printed before Road to Legend was made, and all there was then were dungeons, so the wording made sense back then. In my view, outdoor encounters should be treated as "dungeons" so that all cards and rules still apply. I don't know if there's an official clarification on that issue, though.

Yeah I agree. I don't think the word "dungeon" was ever intended to limit what cards could be played where in regards to outdoor encounters. I mean why would having some grass and trees around suddenly limit the OL's powers?

Very, very interesting question!

Sorry, BTW, if I sounded brusque before. Without access to cards at work (but rules pdfs are wonderful things gui%C3%B1o.gif ) one just can't answer many questions without the actual card texts...

As the cards are written, some use the term dungeon, some do not. Technically, outdoor encounters are not in a dungeon so you can use those cards but they have no effect! partido_risa.gif

Actually, I think this could be a good balancing as the main cards that are affected are the two Uber-powerful cards, Animate Weapons and Curse of the Monkey God. Both have always seemed to me to be a little bit of an almost-automatic all-too-easy TPK, which isn't really all that reasonable. Dark Charm and the space traps are not affected, which means that there are still plenty of things for an OL to spend his Trap Treachery on in an outdoor encounter.

I do agree though that when these cards were printed 'Dungeon' covered all situations. Now it does not.

I will play it that they can't, but be happy to change if a new FAQ comes out saying they can.
