New to Game of Thrones

By tcabril, in 1. AGoT General Discussion

Hello!

I am new to these LCGs but I am liking what I am seeing. As I am the dad and I am trying to teach my son (and a couple of his friends) how to play I would appreciate any assistance.

I just ordered the Core set for a Game of Thrones (oddly enough even though it is sold out one can still buy it from www.bn.com ). So my questions are:

1. The Core set will allow up to 4 people to start right away?

2. How many Packs do you need to buy? One per person or one for eveyone? How are the boosters (for lack of a better word) constructed?

Can you help me out?

Thanks!

Todd

Core Set is enough to have 4 players starts and knowing basic rules and game mecanics. After this is up to you how much you wanna go deep in the game.

If I were starting today I would play a lot core set to understand well which house you prefer. Then I would but Core set of remaining 2 houses (Greyjoy and Martell). In Greyjoy cards are 1x in Martell 2x.

Then if you love Stark there is their own core set (with cards 3x). Same for baratheon and for future houses.

Cycles:

At the moment I think best cycles are King's Landing (very thematic) and the actual one (Brotherhood: my favorite at the moment).

So let's start with Core Set and then see how much love you have in the game and for which house ;-)

As to how the Chapter packs (the "boosters" for this game) are organized, they are all fixed. Buying anyone titled pack will give you precisely the same cards as every other player. The older packs have 20 new cards, 10 x1 and 10 x3 for a total of 40 cards. The newest cycle and all cycles from here on out is 20 new cards all x3. Since you can, without some alteration to the rules, only have anyone card in your deck x3 this gives you a full play set of each card.

I'm interested in getting into AGoT, but confused about what to buy. I want three of every card that is legal to play.... Has anything "rotated" out of constructed play? Are the CCG cards legal to play? What sets need to be bought twice or three times, and which ones only need to be bought once?

THANKS!

Click link in my signature. All LCG legal packs and expansions are there. Quantity per pack/box is in last column. Note that plots, agenda and house cards are hidden by default.

So...

3x:
Core Set
Kings of the Sea (expansion)
A Clash of Arms (cycle)
A Time for Ravens (cycle)
King's Landing (cycle)
Defenders of the North (cycle)

2x:
Princes of the Sun (expansion)
1x:
Lords of WInter (expansion)
Kings of the Storm (expansion)
Brotherhood Without Banners (cycle)
Does that look right?
Thanks!

FYI: the above "shopping cart" comes to $757.64 @ coolstuffinc

Yep. It's good idea to split second PotS with someone. Also I don't recommend buying all packs x3. You can always buy it later if you need those cards.

However, the CCG cards are not legal for LCG events (at least until someone brings up the difficult-to-apply reprint policy). You can safely ignore the CCG cards if you are getting into the game now - unless you are dying to get into a Legacy event (which are few and far between) or want to collect for collecting's sake.

I finally caved and ordered some cards. They were just delievered and I can't wait to get home after work!

I got one each of the Core Set, Kings of the Sea (reprint), Kings of the Storm, Lords of Winter and Queen of Dragons.

I'm obviously waiting on the Princes of the Sun reprint.

What should I get next!?!? More Core Sets? The newer cycles that have 3x each card? Are there plans to reprint the early cycles with the new format?

It depends on which houses you want to play but a second core set is pretty much needed to flesh out the 4 houses in it, if your planning on playing Greyjoy though you will want to go with chapter packs, i would suggest the seasons cycle because Greyjoy winter is a great deck.

grabbing the expansions though really gave you more creativity with how you build decks, good purchase

I am curious about this as well. Anyone know?

This topic gets bandied about once in a while, and the general consensus is "probably not."

I myself just recently picked up a few doubles of some of the earlier packs, based on houses and cards I like to play. It was a bit pricy, but I'm very pleased with the stuff I picked up.

I ended up playing the game with two friends until 5am Saturday night (or Sunday morning, depending how you look at it). Then I picked up two additional core sets on the way home from work Monday. And yesterday I ordered one of each Chapter Pack from the first four cycles (24) - they come tomorrow!!

Welcome to the game ;)

He's fallen into the abyss.....bwhahahahahahah!!

Welcome aboard!

Soooo..... according to FFG's catalog on this site, the older Chapter Packs ARE being reprinted in the 20x3 format.

Ouch :-(
