Fear Stalks the Land - Cthulhu/Hastur Deck

By player437881, in Call of Cthulhu Deck Construction

I decided to put into your consideration a deck I'm working on. It's not tournament friendly, I just play with my wife, and I usually go for a straightforward themed deck, which is what works best for her. The idea is simple, terrorize everything that moves.

So, without further ado, I present (what is still a prototype of) Fear Stalks the Land:

2 Yig, Father of Serpents (Still don't have it, but it's a good good card)
3 Degenerate Serpent Cultist
3 Brood of Yig
3 Feathered Serpent
3 Dreamlands Fanatic (I like the idea of not paying for him to enter the game)

2 Hastur, Lord of Carcossa (An expensive, walking scotophobia)
2 The Thing Behind You (I find this card very amusing, to change the cheap guys)
2 Thing From the Stars (A walking Siren's From Hell)
3 Messenger From Hali (I needed the night to play Sweet Dreams)
2 Night Stalker (Another Terror Struggle is always nice)
2 Keeper of Dreams (To keep the pesky Willpower critters at bay)

2 Sleep of Reason (2 extra Terror struggles are usually very handy)
2 Stygian Idol (Lower cost, more Terror on the snakes... too bad Yig is not a Serpent)
3 Deep One Assault (Because it's just plainly the best card there is)
2 Shrine to Yig (Another extra oomph to the snakes)
2 Midnight Rendezvous (Again, to make sure Sweet Dreams is played)

2 Victoria's Loft (You're most likely always going to win terror struggles anyway)
3 Scotophobia
3 Sweet Dreams
2 Siren's from Hell

2 The Greatest Fear (I find this card very useful, especially with regards to its cost)

I really like the Serpents, because of their natural abundance of Terror, that can be changed into something more useful whenever you deem worth it.

I think the main problems is its slowness (I'm positively unable to create fast decks), and a lack of destruction (only Deep One Assault can get rid of some support cards). I thought of adding Get it Off, and the Crazed Arsonist, but... I'm unsure what to take out. Erich Zann would also be a welcome presence, but I don't have any copy of that card.

Any criticism, suggestion or help is very appreciated. This is the first deck I sat down and really thought of what I was doing thematically (I still have to wrap my head around a Shub/Yog deck for me), so everything anyone has to add is a perfect way of me improving my gaming skills.

I like the theme of a terror deck, and I want to look into creating a Cthulhu/Hastur deck as well. One issue I'd see with this deck, however, is its reliance on combos. There are cards that can be incredibly effective towards your theme that have been left out. I would consider removing Victoria's Loft, Messenger from Hali, and Sweet Dreams. I would replace them with Victoria Glasser, Victoria's Protege, and The Enchanted Wood. The Enchanted Wood will give you the effect of Sweet Dreams as long as you have more Dreamlands locations. There are several other good Dreamlands locations available to neutral (Guardian Pillar) and Hastur (Cavern of Flames, Seventy Steps) that can ensure you keep this effect around. Vicky + Protege + Thing Behind You help you make characters insane at your whim, as long as you have open domains for it. Another thing I'd aim to have is more character destruction/return. While it may not fit an insanity effect in terms of the game, it will definitely drive your opponent crazy! I'd look at Sacrifical Offerings and/or Agoraphobia. I like the concept a lot though! Yay for serpents! happy.gif

Yep, I agree AUCodeMonkey !

Consider playing stuffs that are not reliable on combos, I'm sure you'll have more facilities than the sweet dreams angle !!

Wow, thanks for the help!! I hadn't even looked at Enchanted Wood! That and Guardian Pillar will surely bring the deck up a notch. Victoria and her protege were in the deck, when I made it 55-cards, but then I removed them to keep that silly mechanics... This way, all goes back to normal hehe.

I do have a question... Why the general hatred towards Victoria's Loft? Yes, it can bite you in the backside, but an opportunity to completely shut down the adversaries' characters sounds promising (and as far as I can tell, it will be the card every adversary will spend a destruction card on). I may be in the wrong here, but I've always considered it a funny mechanics.

As far as combo goes... I'm a combo guy, hahahah. Never in my life was I able to do a non-combo deck, or at least not without effort. Some folks like control, a lot of people in this game seem to go for rush (and I can understand why), but I like my combos. Even when it becomes ridiculously obvious that it's the weakest of them all.

Victoria's Loft is a nice idea....I think it's fine as long as your characters all have Terror Icons and aren't likely to be going insane themselves. People DON'T like it because it has no real effect on enemy decks that have Terror / Willpower - unless you are going to be holding a lot of Scotophobia's or have Hastur, Lord of Carcosa in play (situational).

One thing I'd recommend, which I will be sure to put into my Serpent Deck when I make it ....is to throw in 3x Tcho-Tcho Talismans. You were saying it's a shame that Stygian Idol cannot work on Yig himself....well, Tcho-Tcho does the same thing (2-Terror to attached character) - is neutral (no need for resource match)...only costs 1.....and if, by some chance, the thing you have it on is killed, you can pay-1 to return it to your hand to use again later.

Putting this on Yig dramatically increases his power level, because of how he can switch Terror Icons for 2-Combat + 1-Arcane.

A Tcho-Tcho instantly gives him the potential for an additional 4-Combat, 2-Arcane, on top of what he can already have !!! (6-Combat, 4-Arcane)

Thanks Rosh!, I'll be sure to add the Tcho-Tcho (possibly instead of the Stygian Idol). I used to have it, but changed to the Idol with hopes to decrease the cost of the big serpents (only later did I find that Yig isn't a serpent). Guess it's time to put it back.

Wow, all in all, I think it's a done deal. A perfect deck to have my arse delivered on a platter by my wife. The joys of marriage...

I think you're lucky in that you have a wife who WILL play with you - lol. gran_risa.gif
