Die Rolls, Zero, or Ten?

By JudgeGrimm, in Rogue Trader Rules Questions

I have a question that has been nagging me ever since I began the Warhammer 40,000 Roleplays. When you roll for stats and other items of a similar nature, do Zeros count as tens, or Zeros?

Ten, of course.

Agreed. Though I can see why it is confusing:

- Every d10 I've seen has been labelled from 0-9.

- Every rpg I've seen has treated the '0' on a d10 as a 10*, unless you are using them with a percentile die d%) for a d100 roll.

- If using them with a percentile die, the 0 on the d10 is always a 0. The 00 on the d% is a 0, unless the d10 rolls a 0, then the roll is 100.

Every die I've seen with any other number of sides is labelled from 1-x, where x is the number of sides. D10s have the confusion because they are the odd ones out.

Actually, 4-sided dice have twelve numbers on them.

The sides are still numbered 1-4. It's just that the numbers have to be repeated because of the shape.

Not all d10s.

Hmm... I foresee balance issues on the weighting of that die. Which is typically why the 10 more often merely a 0. Balanced weight distribution to allow for a clean roll. With the extra material missing there, the 10 will be the lighter side, and therefore be more likely to land face up.

The best balanced d10's were the old 20-sided numbered 0-9 twice, typically with a - and a + to denote results 1-10 and 11-20 respectively.

No, role playing dice are not that finely balanced. At least not that one on the picture. Notice the rounded corners? That comes from the dice being dipped in paint and then put in a huge tumbler until all the paint except the one in the recessed numbers is taken off and uneven artifacts from the molding process is "sanded" down.
