[rules question] Defense Module timing

By Mad Malthus, in StarCraft

When utilizing a Defense Module, do you swap the 2 front-line units after skirmishes are assigned by the attack, or after support units have been assigned?

The rules say after the skirmish "match-ups", but it is not specified if this includes assignment of support units or not...

After the supporting units are assigned, I would suppose. But then, it would be fairer before they are assigned. An official ruling would be nice. Corey?

I'm pretty sure its after as well given the description mentions support units. Keep in mind the restriction that the unit you swap in has to be able to be attacked by the opposing front line unit (by its attack capability I mean).

"When defending, after match-ups have been made for a skirmish, the player may switch any two of his units between skirmishes (they may be front-line or support units, but not assist units). A player may only switch a unit into the front-line of a skirmish if the opponent’s front-line unit has the ability to attack it."

Hi,

I dont"t understand if defender can switch his front-line unit with assist unit? So unit which was front-line is after use assist unit?

And defender can use this modul everywhere in the galaxy or just in the area containg his base?

Thx :)

Given that the full description doesn't make sense if it is before support and assist units are assigned, I'd argue it's meant to be after their assigment as well.

If by "assist unit" you mean "supporting unit", then yes, if I understood that correctly. Assist units can't be juggled around, but supporting units can, and it doesn't mention a restriction that the two switched units do both have to be FLU or supporting units.

Anywhere, otherwise the description would mention it.

Yes, Defense Module is indeed unclear. I have couple of thoughs :

Lets imagine 2 such skirmishes Protoss attacks Terran :

1. Protoss zealot (FLU) vs. Teran marine (FLU) supported by firebat.

2. Protoss dragoon (FLU) vs. Terran vulture (FLU) supported by siege tank

How's the switching occurs ? Can i :

a) Switch marine with firebat ( or vulture with a tank )

b) Switch marine with the vulture ( or firebat with th tank )

Another question - WHEN to switch ? I suppose after skirmishes have been setup and supporting units have been assigned, but BEFORE or AFTER combat and reinforcement cards been set ??

Brazlowsky - I think you are allowed (in your example) to do both of replacements (you can choose whatever you like) , and even you are allowed to replace the Marine with Tank (!).

However, in such case, I'm not sure if Marine is forced to support Vulture (but, of course, you assing supporting units to skirmishes, so you can predict where you want to switch units).

When to use it? Of course, immediately after all units were assigned to skirmishes. Notice that you (defender) are the last side which assign any units (supporting + assist), so you can do a perfect use of that module.

Look how powerfull this module can be vs some special skirmish setup (e.g. allowing the attacking side to kill the hero easily, when he is the supporting unit).

Now I'm pretty sure that's why that module appeared in BW, but I've thought earlier only FLU can be switched together. sorpresa.gif

That makes the huge difference - you should now always build that module if you know you will be using the hero or other powerfull, expensive units. lengua.gif
