Stacking Movement Effects

By EvilEdwin, in Talisman Rules Questions

I know this subject has been discussed here before, probably a few times, but I don't think there has ever been an official answer.

It's to do with stacking movement affecting cards such as Torch, Magic Carpet, Riding Horse etc

I know generally cards of these types can't be combined. With Torch and Riding Horse that's very clear. As it is with Riding Horse and Clockwork Owl. But., and I think this caused a much discussion last time, can you use a Torch and Magic Carpet? Or a Torch and Amulet of Speed? Or even the Amulet of Speed, reroll and the use the Clockwork Owl? All very difficult questions to answer during a game.

I thought about it in this way:

If a card "Manipulates" your roll it can't be combined with another. So you can't use the Torch to roll two dice, choose one, and then use the Hunchback to move up to the die roll you choose. Similarly you can't use the Riding Horse to roll two dice and then use the Hunchback.

But if card "Activates" as the result of a die roll then you can use it. So if you use the Torch and roll a 6, you can then use the Leprechaun's ability or the Flying Carpet. Equally if you roll a 1 you can move the Reaper. It's in the FAQ that if the Amazon uses her ability and chooses a 1 she still moves the Reaper, so it makes sense to apply that ruling more broadly.

Obviously there may be combinations that sit outside of these two ideas, but generally I think they apply in most instances.

Thinking ahead, if you can only use one movement effect full stop, must you declare what that will be before you roll? So if I have the Amulet of Speed and the Magic Carpet, must I state that I'm rolling with the intent to reroll should I get a 1, thereby forgoing the Magic Carpet's ability should I roll a 6? (Ignore the teleport on the Amulet of Speed for this example). Would the opposite also be true? If I state I'm rolling with the intent to activate the Magic Carpet and I roll a 1, can I not then use the Amulet of Speed?

I'm sorry if I'm overcomplicating or overthinking things, but I think this needs clearing up, if only for my own sanity!

Cheers guys and gals.

Hello EvilEdwin,

I understand that stacking many effects is not simple, but it doesn't happen very often that Characters have so many options that you face real problems in handling the situation. However, these are some advices, or "rules" if you prefer:

1) When an effect makes you roll two dice and add together the result (e.g. Riding Horse) or doesn't allow you to roll for movement (e.g. Poltergeist), then you cannot use any effects that are "triggered" by a "movement die roll".

Examples: no Flying Carpet, no Troll Regeneration, no Clockwork Owl/Hunchback/Amulet of Speed are allowed. You have to roll a (single) die to use all these effects.

2) If you have abilities that allow you to roll 2 dice and choose the result, you're still rolling 1 die. Once the result is chosen, you can trigger other effects.

Example: Troll in the Dungeon with a Torch rolls a 1 and a 6. If he chooses to use the 6 he can regenerate and end his turn, or use the Flying Carpet we assume he has, or move up to 6 spaces, if he has the Clockwork Owl / Hunchback too. If he elects to use the 1 he may either move 1 space and roll for Reaper, or re-roll the 1 thanks to his Amulet of Speed. After this second re-roll, he still can use Clockwork Owl/Hunchback or other effects depending on the final result.

Of course it seldomly happens that a Character has all this movement-changing stuff, but I don't see any difficulties in determining what he can do.

3) If you have more than one effect that allows you to roll 2 dice and choose the result, you cannot stack the effects.

Example: Amazon in the Dungeon with the Torch. She already has the ability to roll 2 dice for movement and choose the result to use. The Torch replicates it and the text doesn't allow stacking*.

* Please notice that some effects, like Warhorse/Psionic Blast or Prophetess/Orb of Knowledge are stackable, because there's nothing wrong with applying the same text twice (with care; the Prophetess can benefit from the Orb of Knowledge only in multiple draw card spaces, because her ability says that you must encounter the replacement card; you can discard and replace both cards on a 2+ Draw card space if you wish).

The above effect and the Always-have-a-Spell abilities (e.g. Wand and Wizard's ability) cannot be stacked.

Anyway, in my group we rule that if you have more than one effect that influences movement (for example, the Amazon with a Magic Carpet, or a character with Torch and Horse), you get to choose one and ignore the other. You can choose which effect to use on each turn.

This is an interesting limitation, but it's a house rule. I tried to explain how the standard rules apply.

According to the rules, Amazon can use her ability and Magic Carpet, but a Character cannot use both Torch and Riding Horse, because there are different wordings in the various abilities. The rules are not that difficult to apply, IMO, they just require some careful reading and understanding of the card text.
