Feral Pack + Syrio Forel

By chadwick537, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

Hey Guys,

I'm not sure if it would ever come up, but imagine the following scenario:

I control the following cards:

Feral Pack (3) STR (3) Military
[stark Character]
Creature. Direwolf.

No attachments.
While every character you control has the (Stark) affiliation, Feral Pack gains: 'All Direwolf characters gain deadly, and all non-Direwolf characters lose deadly.'

Syrio Forel
(s0) STR (2) Military Shadows
[Neutral Character]
Ally.

Stealth.
Response: After you win a challenge in which Syrio Forel participated, put him into Shadows.

Assuming the only other characters I control are Stark characters and I win a military challenge in which Syrio and a Direwolf were involved, how would the resolution of the challenge step resolve? Would I be able to put Syrio back into the shadows and thus have my Direwolf deadly turn "back on" forcing them to kill a character defending in the challenge?

Thanks!

No, deadly (passive effect) is checked before responses.

Correct.

Just to be clear: when you trigger the Response and put Syrio back into Shadows, your Feral Pack will indeed be Deadly. Unfortunately, you will always be past the point in resolving the challenge where Deadly is checked - and you are not allowed to go backwards and resolve it all over again.

Put in another light, let's say you attacked with Feral Pack. Grey Wind and Syrio. They defended with Bronn (who has Deadly). When you resolve the challenge, the first thing you do is settle claim (say they used Bronn's ability and stood him instead of killing him). Then you settle Deadly - which in this case leads to nothing because both Grey Wind and Bronn have Deadly. Now you do Responses and put Syrio back into Shadows, which kicks in Feral Pack, giving it Deadly while taking Bronn's away. Would you have to check Deadly a second time?

That particular example goes a little further in illustrating that Deadly, as a passive ability, always comes before Responses. So the Syrion/Feral Pack thing doesn't amount to anything because of the timing.
