Why Is TOI So Hard To Find?

By 53Punisher, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

Hi Everyone, gran_risa.gif

New to the forums & the game system. Read alot & researched about the game before deciding to buy then purchased vanilla boxed set and the RTL expansion. I wanted to get the Tomb Of Ice expansion as well, but saw that's it OOP & nearly impossible to get on-line at a reasonable price (if you can find it at all). So, what's the deal with this expansion? Is it THAT good that everyone gobbled it up & no more are to be found unless you pay big money, or what? Do you all think FFG will be re-releasing it within our lifetimes? llorando.gif

Dumb question, but does anyone have an idea where I can get a copy and not have to sell my soul to the great gaming gods?

Thanks!

The base game's been reprinted several times; the earlier expansions probably have as well. I would assume you just had unlucky timing and got into the game when the expansion you wanted was between print runs.

Thoughthammer claims they expect to get it back in stock this year.

Thanks for the reply, Antistone. I guess I'll have to wait and see if it becomes more readily available anytime over the next few months as I'd really like to add it to my base system. From what I've been reading, TOI and RTL are the best expansions to add at this point.

Just checked out the links in your sig. Great stuff! As a game designer myself, I can appreciate all the work/dedication it takes to work on these projects. Thumbs up man! Oh, BTW at this point, I have to play solo, so I'm hoping to get as much chrome as possible to fill out the vanilla game and your enhancements will go a long way into aiding that.

I spoke with someone from CoolStuffInc and he said it should be in stock by the end of November or early December.

My Tomb of Ice preorder from coolstuffinc Arrived to my house today:) So it should be back in stock somewhere!

It's current state is shipping from FFG to gaming stores and distributors. According to the website that part of the process started on November 22rd and takes 7-10 days for US stores. Longer for Canada and I would imagine even longer if the receiver is not in the US or Canada.

I'm hoping to receive mine via my pre-order anytime in the next short while.

Here's the FFG link

Thanks guys & right you are! I ordered a copy and have it on the way. I also ordered WoD & AoD since those three (along with RtL, which I already have) seem to be the main ones (by consensus here) that's needed for the most balanced overall system.

It's also everything except for Sea of Blood, and SoB definitely has some balance issues from what I'm seeing around here. =P

FWIW, I think each expansion can be added to the base game separately and still leave it balanced. WoD and AoD do give the OL more obvious boosts. ToI does give mroe obvious boosts to the heroes. But it's just a matter of adapting to the new options. You get wowed by the big sparklies, the faction that got boosted does well for a few games, but then things even out as the other side learns how to counter those new options. At least that's been my experience each time I added an expansion to the game (I've been buying them as they come out, so they've been getting added one at a time.)

We had been playing the core game for some time and about 2 months ago i made the huge step of buying the same 3 things. We wanted to play the campaign but it seemed kinda dry without the options that the 2 expansions give you (new heroes, skills, new monsters and most of all treachery).

Now if i ever decide to go to SoB i might buy it together with ToI.

Well guys, I'm finally the proud owner of all the "needed" expansions- Wod, AoD, RtL and at long last [drumroll] ToI. Now comes the sorting into the storage system I made to keep all this stuff organized. Still part of the fun, though. Next, I plan to dedicate some serious solo play time into getting more aquainted with the vanilla game, and as I feel the need, throw in components from the expansions. I wanted to have "all" the various components & monsters available so that I can take advantage of the "complete' system.

Drglord: I agree with you that it's a huge step (investment) to buy the expansions. At this point, I've forked-over some serious cash, to which I'm hoping the overall system delivers what I'm expecting (from researching it over the past few months) before deciding to go for it full-bore. It's important to me especially because I'm playing this solo for lack of players. At this point, I'm not getting into SoB until it's tweaked enough (as per Steve O & others) so it fits better with the rest of the system.

The other thing I'm looking into are the various solo play rules developed & posted. Oh, and hey Tundrra , nice job on your DMQRG! Already installed on my phone. Looking forward to updates & added content.

Well, I'm glad that TOI is finally in print. Gonna get this expansion soon. Our games need balancing; the treachery cards and monsters from Altar of Despair tip the game too much in the OL's favor.
