New Player - 3 quick questions

By Corwyn2, in Dark Heresy Rules Questions

New player to DH (though longtime RPG player). I have the DH core rule book and the IHB so far, and I've just started to read this forum. I've read the DH core book cover to cover, and now I'm starting on the IHB book. I've got 3 simple questions for now, but undoubtedly will have more later.

1. Are there any point-buy systems for stats, divination, fate points, etc...? I hope to eventually play online with MapTools (since I don't think there are any DH players around here). Is there any official (in a supplement?) alternative system to rolling for stats? Or perhaps a commonly-accepted point-buy system that has been house-ruled? What do you do in your own home games? And do you really roll the stats in order, or do you just roll 9 times and then let the players assign them where they want to. I can only imagine that most people will want to play a certain class first and foremost, instead of rolling dice and going "Oh, guess I'm cut out to be a guardsman" ;-)

2. Are there any ways to reduce Corruption? I read on the forums that in the Ascension book there is, but I really don't expect to ever get that high in level.

3. I found the DH character generator (which is awesome! except for Divination I guess), linked from the FFG site. Anyhow, I saw that there was an option to select Eldar, Dwarf, Tau, or Human as race. Are there rules supplement for playing an Eldar? Perhaps in the Radical's Handbook?

1 -> Rogue Trader and Deathwatch suggest giving players 100 points to spend on their characteristics if they don't want the random system.

There is no official method to derandomise the fate points and divination. Personally I see no problem with giving players maximum fate points (if you find a player has too many, you can always arrange for him to burn one) and letting them pick their divination.

2 ->Armour of Contempt does reduce corruption in general. High Willpower and talents to resist fear will stop a lot of corruption (in my experience, failed fear tests vs the warp are a major source of CP).

3 -> Rogue Trader: Into The Storm has rules for Kroot and Ork player characters. Those are the only non-human player character options. This shouldn't be too surprising when the general attitude towards non-humans is shoot on sight, meaning that an alien PC will either die quickly or have to hide away where it can't do much (Rogue Trader makes them playable as it mostly takes place outside the Imperium).

I'd suggest staying away from that generator until you find out what house rules it is using, as it is using a lot. For example, there has never been any race in 40k called a Dwarf.

Good stuff, thanks for the info! Sounds like 100 pts to spend on stats is the closest thing to an official point-buy system... good to know.

Too bad about corruption I guess I'll have to look into avoiding it as much as possible, as you suggested.

Didn't know about the house rules on that char generator site and yeah I suppose that was supposed to be "Squat" instead of Dwarf.
