Viability of Multi-Faction (Beyond 2) Decks ???

By The Dog of War, in Call of Cthulhu Deck Construction

So, I have made most of my decks either 2-Faction (which seems the most common) or Mono-Faction (some of which are more viable than others).

I have been wondering, recently, if there is a legitimate possibility of Multi-Faction decks - of 3 or more Factions....or if this is bound to fail ?

As a concept-deck, I put together a Syndicate, Agency, Cthulhu mix last night - and will play around with it later today in some test games. In theory, as long as you get at least one of the Faction in your opening draw, you should be okay to play later cards; as long as you aren't mixing in Steadfast and/or Loyal cards.

Also, the idea is to tie together multiple "annoying themes" of the factions - in this case, Exhaustion (Syndicate), Wounding (Agency), and Terror (Cthulhu).

Is such a concept even viable though ? Has anyone had experience with their own multi-Faction "Rainbow"-type decks ? (note that with 3-Factions you can split it 17-17-16, and still be at 50, or 17-17-18, and still be at 52 (which I have no problem playing with either).

I've seen multicolored decks (note the old game CCG had a rainbow build that was quite potent) in the modern game. it is tricky to resource well, but give it a go!

Several three faction decks have been played at Stahleck, so, yes, it can work.

If you wonder if the trifaction is a nice potion, just ask the Belgian players. Most of them have already tryed some and they seemed to enjoy it.

I'm actually playing bifactions decks including a huge proportion of neutrals, which tend to play as a trifaction one. The main problem being the first 2 turn of ressourcing. It's sometimes an head-or-tails ressourcing, as you don't know what you will be drawing in your deck.

Yog is a perfect tri faction, as it allows you to mess up with deckcycling, mixing the ressource with Twilight Gate.

So what would you recommend ? - Yog - Cthulhu - Agency ? or Yog - Hastur - Cthulhu ? - like, what kind of composition have you seen work "best" with 3-Faction combinations ?

I was messing around with an Agency - Cthulhu - Syndicate mix recently - and it's fun to play around with, but I'm not sure it's the best possible mix of Factions. It does allow me a lot of versatility, and as long as I keep the proportion 17-17-16 = 50 cards - than I almost always get at least 1-card of each Faction in the opening hand. If not, just Mulligan. Chances are high-% that you should get at least one of each (for initial Resourcing) with the original draw of 8, or the redraw of 8 due to Mulligan.

Since you (hopefully) set up the deck not needing Loyal cards - and going with a lot of 1-2 cost cards, it should not be a problem playing most of the game with just those starting resources (and building a few more on them, of course, for higher costing things).

Well, the best multifactions decks I had to play against were Agency/shubb/miska and Shubb/Yog/cthulhu.

The first one is based on the curator + supports, the second one on destruction + resurection on your side of the table.

I could'nt give you more information, as I just played against them and did not practice them. Maybe you should ask B_P or mzi, who are high-leveled belgians players, to share their knowledge with you ???

Hi!

I think there are two ways of building a tri faction (or more deck) the normal way and the combo way :D

The combo way (like over abusing a curator) permits to lower the amount of cards of several factions of your deck. Recently, I played a miska hastur shub deck with 6 shub cards. 0 cost cards can be usefull too. Loyal characters can be part of tri faction decks, but, 2 cost character maximum like obsessive insmoniac. Drawing a lot really helps.

The normal way is more complicated and restrictive. For example, I layed a cthul shub yog neutral destroy and great old ones deck in 2009. The first problem was to play low cost characters the firsts turn to defend stories. So I had to imagine several ways of sourcing to put defenses.

You can alos imagine a tri faction deck with a faction just for mid game. in that case, you know several cards of your deck will not bu of any use util turn 4-5 so, you can source them easily.

But, well, I think you absolutely need a strategy first. The cthul yog shub deck, my strategy was to put into play a living mummy, kill it, survive with my invulnerable great old ones, and keep the difference between his characters ad mine with Cthulhu and y'golonac. Here, the tri faction deck was a necessity. I never thought :" hey, what if I make a tri faction's deck today?" :)
