Servitor Crew Upgrade question

By The_Horned_Rat, in Rogue Trader Rules Questions

If an explorer upgraded his ship with a servitor crew would there then be a need for spending points on quarters?

It would seem that there would only be a handful of people needing quarters, the trader, his entourage, the navigators and astropaths, maybe some other flunkies. certinely under 1000.

The question is could the explorer then use "luxury quarters" for this part of the crew? even making the space larger say 3 space, 2 power, 2 ship points.

he would still be saving space as servitors do not need living areas.

what are some ideas for an explorer looking into this? Can they use he space saved for other things? transport space, criminal holding cells, barracks for ship borne troops, etc?

Lets hear the ideas.

Servitors require maintenance facilities, maybe cryocombs for unused servitors as well. It should be noted that unless your vessel was designed with the express purpose of being crewed by a servitor crew you'd still expect to have quarters for the intended crew.

I can not find anything in DH, RT, or DW stating that servitors "require maintenance facilites". A simple reclemation bay would serve this purpose, and still be cheaper then buying crew quarters.

why wouldn't a vessel be designed with this in mind? A vessel is not going to have a regular crew and a servitor crew. Not having to house, feed, and take care of the health of such a large crew is going to have an enormous effect. Explorers never have to worry about mutiny, extended supply vaults would last longer, this upgrade changes the entire dynamic of the ship and what it can do.

ships with crew quarters could now use the space for pretty much anything.

Also you can get the Turbo Weapon upgrade on Staravar Laser Macrobattery, giving you a weapon with 24 VU range at no penalty. Best craftsmanship would bump it up to 26 VU.

I'm not saying that a vessel couldn't be designed with the intent being crewed by servitors; I'm saying it would be comparatively rare, given that most Rogue Trader vessels are ex-Imperial Navy which tends to view servitors as unreliable, a view that most civilian captains (unless they're augmeticist addicts like Uber Aemos from the Eisenhon series that believe wholeheartedly in the purity of metal) would share. Couple this with the extreme expense of commissioning a new vessel, and almost all ships in the Expanse are likely to be equipped with the Essential crew-quarters.

If it bothers you that much in a game that you're running, fold the space requirement for the Crew Reclamation Facility into the Crew Quarters and add 1 power.

Uber Aemos was a savant, Tobias Maxilla however did have a ship with a servetor crew. Using the discritpion by Mr. Abnett a Loki-class would fit nicely with a trophy room, luxery quarters, servitor reclemationbay, and the upgrade ostentatious display of wealth.
