New Player seeking advice.

By rodeoclownjihad, in Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay

Hello everyone. I just picked up WHFRP core box and have yet to play my 1st game. My wife and I a currently writing up characters and will begin our 1st game soon but I have a question or 2.

Action cards - The rulebook is kind of confusing on whether or not action cards can be taken by multiple players. It seems as though careers work the same way as when a player randomly selects their career, that career is no longer available. I know there are 3 copies of each of the basic action cards but there is only 1 of each other. So if a player selects an action card is that action no longer available? (I'm only asking for core rules not house rules.)

Also, are there any tips or tricks anyone would recommend for a new player?

No, there is no rule limiting how many players can have a specific action card/talent.

Ah ok. so then the players will have to share the action cards. ok ty.

While there is no rule saying no more than one player may have an action, sharing cards will be a bit akward. And with so many cards to choose from, it might be a better idea if one of you just got a different action. Or bought an extra core set to get duplicate cards ;)

I'd also recommend not sharing cards, either choose different actions (having different actions makes for a more interesting play in my opinion), even though it's not said straight out in the rules I think the lack of multiples indicate that they are meant to be unique per player. But if you really want doublets just photocopy the actions (on cardboard or glue them to cardboard and use a sleeve).

Some other advice:

- Make sure to get the errata&FAQ, there's some important stuff there. Also get the errata'ed cards (Rapid Fire, Double strike and the bright wizard order card). You can find them at the support pages.

- Another great rules reference is Universalhead's summary, almost all of the rules in ~5 pages. Get it here:

Good luck and don't hesitate to ask if there's anything else you need to know.

That was probably the least helpful post I've ever seen. The website wasn't helpful at all and it's extremely comical that it was supposed to be "nuff said". This isn't world of warcraft pal.

Thank you so much for leading me to that reference sheet. That should make our 1st game much easier to get going. Also after to talking to my players last night, we will not be sharing cards. I thought that, like the careers, having everyone with something different will make each individual player bring something unique to the party making it more diverse.

Thank you so much for your responses and helpful advice.

While I agree that the website didn't really help with your question, the website does have several very usefull DFs for download. Particularly the Basic Action Card list.is very handy if you have more than 3 players (only three sets of basic action cards in the box).

My apologies. I was directing you to the rules reference sheets and basic action summary sheet (version 1.0 is the complete one). The clarity of rules presentation there is handy. Also, the basic action summary sheet replaces all the basic cards and takes up a lot less space.

BTW, I not invovled with any WoW or other MMO communities so I'm not sure how people act over there (except maybe through my experiences with D&D and RPGA players if that's the type of person you mean).

Good gaming,

(P.S. my favorite 'most unhelpful post' is "You're the GM, you can do what you want.") ;)

My apologies as well. Yeah rpga players are probably the same type. (I'm trying to get away from D&D and WotC games. Im liking the flexibility and presentation of ALL of FFG's RPGs better. I own about all except RT and Grimm i think.)

When i went to the site nothing worked. The links all loaded as separate, blank, windows. So it wasn't very helpful at all. I am however on a mac (not sure how that would effect anything as i can open everything but microsoft office documents). So if they are MSO docs then that could be why.
