character sheet...am I missing something?

By Gantz the slaughterer, in Deathwatch

hello....some clarification about the char.sheet.

the skill:

no "square" for Cipher...and only trained (no basic) for chapter runes ???

in wich way i correct write my skill???

the same for common lore, drive, forbidden lore, literacy, navigation, scholastic lore, speak, tactics and tracking...

anyone can help me???

All of the skills mentioned are

advanced

and

group

skills (p 93 overview, p. 94 explanation advanced skills - p 202 explanation on how untrained skills work)

That means you can only attempt the Characteristic test associated with it only IF you have learned the skill,

and it is learned per subgroup, ie your chapter's runes don't help you with other uses of the Cypher Skill.

ok....and the two "box" for the awareness ?

Awareness is a basic skill. This means that anyone can use it using 1/2 the characteristic. Because space marines are given awareness as a trained skill- they then fill in the box in the trained section. The two boxes simply mean it's a basic skill, that has been trained. If the player were to get +10 bonus in a basic skill, there would be 3 boxes.

If the player were to get +10 in an advanced skill (one that can't be used as a basic skill, and thus has no box filled in the first one), then he'd have 2 boxes filled. One for the trained, and one for the +10

The important thing to understand that skills are classed as basic on their own. Awareness is basic because it is something everyone naturally can do. Ciphers is classed as advanced, because you do specifically need to be trained to use it.

This is probably the 3rd time I've described this:

Basic - can use the skill untrained, roll at 1/2 attribute

Advanced - cannot use the skill untrained

And then:

Trained - Can roll full attribute on a skill

Untrained - Do not roll full attribute on skill (so either 1/2 with basic, or not at all with advanced)

Currently, in DW, I don't think there are many ways to improve advanced skills to basic skills (that's mostly in the other systems). The key thing to note is that when you train in an advanced skill, it does not suddenly become a basic skill. Pretty much, nothing the player does causes skills to switch between advanced or basic, that has to do with the skill itself.

Also, remember, the character sheet has errors on it, check p36.

Ah well, I've never known any character sheet of any RPG to be complete and correct. the only one thazt comes close is the booklet for DH but for the rest no character sheet, ever, has been sufficient enough. It seems like a compulsory flaw in RPG designers, they always, always overlook the 'real' needs of a character sheet.

My two bits....

The reason Awareness gets Basic and Trained boxed in is cause anybody is aware of their surroundings by nature....however, in this case, Space Marines have been specially trained to notice more about what is going on around them than a normal citizen. The reason Chapter Runes only gets Trained and not Basic is cause no one is innately able to understand a specific Cipher, one has to be trained to be able to understand.

so, for my SW Assault......

i remove the wing of angel or wrathfull descend , and pilot (my SW don't use the jump pack)

with the 1.000xp plus a bonus from the romeved ability aftermentioned i gave him...

the couter attack (500xp) from chapter advance, also the hardy (400) and sound constitution (500)....for skill I add survival (300)....

i raise the WS , STR , AGI by five point (600xp)

what do you think about?

Well it is all up to you but for balance i would make the changes equal to or very close to the same points cost. I might have missed it, but it looked like you added 2300 after removing 1000 plus cost of the ability. As long as the points balance, I would not have a problem with one of my players doing that.

I'd make the same concession for changing out equipment too; req for req.

Why doesn't your Space Wolf use the jump pack?

As an assault marine he will have been previously trained to use them (Sky claws) therefore you can't really sell the skills just because you want to...

simply because in the background of my marine.....he was never become a skyclaw....
