Poltergeist

By Drake Leonclaw, in Talisman Rules Questions

The poltergeist follower is one of those bad ones, clinging onto you and forcing you to only move 1 space per turn. It says you can only rid yourself of it by crossing the River, either by bridge, raft, or ferry. You must then discard it.

The last time I played this, a character got this, and we interpreted crossing the river via bridge to also include going from the City to the Fields (and vice versa) that takes you over the river (just look at he game art, there's a bridge and everything). Also the same applies to the Village on the opposite end of the board.

Are we in the right? was it intended to include these bridges, and not just the sentinel?

To get rid of the poltergeist, you must go from the outer region to the middle region, either by defeating the sentinel, using a raft, spell etc.., so even if you teleport back and forth in the same region as you encounter the poltergeist, you´re stock with it.

Yes, these two will do, as well as the Sentinel in either direction.

No you don't have to cross from the Outer Region to the Middle Region or vice-versa. The bridges by the City and Village also force you to discard the Poltergeist!

I've never really seen the Poltergeist as being that bad. He adds certainty to where you can move, which can bring its own rewards. Farming the Ruins for two cards for example, or making certain you can reach the City to heal.

Of course it's always circumstantial. But he's not a follower I necessarily try to get rid of straight away. In the right situation he can be an asset.

Okay. I did not know they also counts as bridges, as i have never seen them mentioned anywhere as with the sentinel space, where the rulebook specific says that there is a bridge. Always thought that is was just some of the art on the board witch didn´t have any influence in the game.

Then it is rather easy to get rid of the poltergeist

Thanks anyway..

Yes that's true, unless you draw the Poltergeist while you are in the Desert next to the Temple. A minimum of 9 turns before you can get rid of the Poltergeist!

Ell.

It's funny to me because the guy who had the poltergeist at the time was so happy that on his next turn he was going to be able to go from the village to the fields (he had spent 3 turns already limping to that space) and get rid of the thing, but right before his turn I cast the hex spell in the fields space, effectively inserting a land mine in his destination. He was so tired of the thing he just said screw it and landed on the space anyway.

I always thought the bridge was inculded. Your crossing the river after all.

The Poltergeist and drawing the Magic Stream is always fun!

Do we know for sure if this is an official answer? Any time they speak about a river in the rulebook, it's about the main river that separates the outer and middle regions. I think the two small corner bridges do not count and they are there merely for aesthetic purposes. It just seems to easy to get rid of the poltergeist with the small bridges. However, if this is an official ruling, then I'm willing to agree with that.

I think you can take it as official.

Looking in the rulebook, can't see anywhere at all it talks about the River just being the River that devides the middle region from the outer region. It does say the Storm river devides it?.

That makes it more easier to get rid of it gran_risa.gif

I have ask this question 1 a 2 days ago, and i got the answer yesterday from John Goodenough.

Poltergeist+crossing river

Q: Can you also lose the Poltergeist if you cross the small bridges by the village and the city in the outer region?

A: Yes

Thanks, I'm in first game and didn't see these board features!
