Troops Packs and more...

By Cigar, in Tannhauser

Hello all,

I took about a year long break from Tannhauser and recently discovered the revised rule book. I had a few questions regarding this rule book and the released troops packs.

Firstly is this "revised rule book" part of the Novgorod expansion? I was planning on buying it and if the rulebook is the same as the revised, I suppose there wouldn't be a point in spending an extra 10 bucks.

Continuing with the rulebook line of questions, are the revisions significant? I just couldn't get myself intrigued with the combat. Seemed too quick and heroes would perish within a single turn of dice rolls. Then again this is recalling from a foggy memory. Basically what I'm asking is... do the revised rules bring about enough changes to entice an older player to sign back up as it were.

On to hero packs. I was kind of confused as to their purpose. I see that they contain 2 of each of the Reich and Unions troops choices (repainted). Are these packs intended for the die-hard collectors who just desire an alternate paint scheme. I'm under the impression that they contain more than repainted miniatures. What else might they include? And are they worth the 20 buckaroos?

Thank you much for your time and effort...

Sincerely,

Cigar

The revised rules include rules for Novrogod and all other figures released prior to it. I love the troop packs, number one for the extra tokens and pack options. Also if a trooper dies and you send reinforcements you have extra token to leave behind for the equipment. They each come with a scenario and give you different set up options for your team. The combat is more forgiving with the revised rules but still can be deadly. It's typically not as easy to kill a character off and overwatch and command points change things.

I believe the new rules are only included with the base game, they're maked with a red sticker. They are also available for $5 as a download.

As for what the rules add, I think the Command Point system and Overwatch are the biggest changes. While the change to combat is basicly a locked dice pool based on the weapon not the character, ie pistols always roll 4 dice. In my experience the stroy dirven scenarios benifit the most from the new rules the other modes especially Deathmatch feel about the same, actually Deathmatch may have be slightly worse as it now takes longer to play.

And I agree with Grayle the Troop Packs add a lot of new options just as the Hero singles do. The biggest change with the Troop Packs is they include a new Command Pack (formally called a Mental Pack) for both the new trooper and the ones included in the base game.

Thank you for the replies.

I will certainly purchase the revised rulebook now that I know it has added new game rules and mechanics.

As far as the troop packs are concerned, let me make sure I understand this. The troop packs actually add content to the game. They have different abilities over the ones in the base set? It's been so long since I've played that I forgot about reinforcements.

Yes, they have a new pack of equipment, and they allow you to field two of the same troop type, ie two Schocktruppen instead of one Schock and one Stoss. Each pack includes 2 minis 12 tokens 2 character cards, and a booklet w/ rules and a scenario. I think they're worth $20 but you can find them cheaper.

Ahh I see... I never thought about that. The ability to field 2 of the same. how interesting.... I love the idea! Thanks again.
