BL's Future on Trial

By Pedro Lunaris, in Battlelore

I take all of you have seen the latest FFG announcements on BL. They are re-releasing some classic BL products, including the Core Set, from it's French versions. Cards will be reprinted in english and books will be downloadable in the Queen's language.

It seems like a smart move to allow FFG to take the best from the recent releases, HoHo, Bearded Braves and Chivarly something. It was no good to have releases for a game that offers no starting point after all. You couldn't get any new players.

All must know that FFG has a problem in reprinting the Core Set. It is just too expensive. The price in the stores would be high enough for it to be posibly an investment in a black hole. Adapting the french materials allows FFG to put BL's products on the market without much of a cost. I don't think they expect it to sell as much as a new game, completely in english. And, as some have said, they'll still have to address the "no Core Set" problem after the French copies end - if they do, that is.

So why don't just release a Core Set in a new way? A new Core Set, maybe with fewer figures, like only human ones - and basic goblin and dwarf expansions with the Core Set figures of those races plus something.

Well, maybe those frech packages were a find. Maybe FFG didn't want to let a bunch of french boxes to remain waiting for a french fanbase to reemerge.

I think there is another reason as well. We weren't getting any BL news for a while since HoHo came. Everyone of us was worried we wouldn't see anything official of BL anymore. We know the game didn't use to fit FFG's views for some reason - as it was told when BoW was released, "a BL Game".

But now we are seeing things change! Has FFG awoken to how much BL is an outstanding game, and that it has the possibility of a very proeminent future if it can see some decent investment from it's owner company?

I think BL's future is on trial. I think what we are seeing is the chance of it to flourish - or else... I hope I'm wrong and what we are seeing is already BL starting to reemerge on all of it's glory.

If I'm right, I just hope FFG doesn't expect the french boxes to sell as much as new reprinted all-english boxes would. I just figure the appeal to new players will be less this way. I know that there are some of us, new players already in the game, who will benefit a lot with not-Core re-releases; I'm actually thinking I know will be able to own everything ever released to BL, one thing that I never thought would happen! But I don't expect these sells to people already in the game to be as high as the sells needed to keep a title going it's full force.

So, what can we do? We can encourage EVERYONE we know to get into the game. I trust we all know these french readaptations will probably come in a better price-benefit value than any new basic release FFG comes up with. The Core Set itself worths a lot if you picture how amazing the game is, and how much you can do just with those Core Set figures. I, for instance, could play just the Core Set for a whole year without having to add anything to avoid boredom.

People, let's start a BATTLELORE LIVES! campaign!!! Let's make FFG see how strong a fanbase it has, and how much stronger (and larger) it can become!

This game just deserves much, much more than it has been given to it since it's birth (from what I hear from you). And I'm wanting to see just that from now on.

Cheers! Keep gaming.

Pedro

I know I intend to buy into this big time. Now finally I will be able to own everything. The fact that some things were out of print is what caused me to never buy anything beyond the base set. This is good news.

I think FFG have invested energy and money into Battlelore, and have demonstrated a committment to supporting it. Hopefully these French adaptions are interim solutions while FFG build up their concept for a Battlelore base set in their own vision.

In the mean time - play on! I am loving this game at the moment, I'll certainly be grabbnig all the expansions I don't already own.

Cheers,

Giles.

Interesting topic here.

I'm kind of curious as to why there are so many unpurchased copies in the French language? Do the French hate Battlelore? They don't know what they are missing.

Anyway... I'm certain that FFG will be surprised at how quickly the expansions and core set sell. There will be people that buy 20 copies and try to sell them on ebay. There will also be others that just want to get into Battlelore and/or complete the expansion set. Regardless, they will go quick.

We'll just have to make wagers on which will sell out first. Hundred Years War should be easy favorite... probably followed by the core set.

the reason there are so many french core sets is cos when ff bought the game from dow

they sed that they were not going to suport it in french thus dumping a large section of there market

and some very comited bl fans

poor french boxes... now they'll be recovered... but it's ironical... to be translated to english must be worse than Hell...

to them, to them!

I'm being translated to english all the while and having quite a good time.

hm.. on an after thought, I'm not actually sure how Hell feels like...

(if no one noticed, ironic mode is on for this two messages, all right? ;o] )
