A couple of encounter related questions

By Pseudonym, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

Hi everyone,

I just got the game a couple of days ago, and I played it twice solo. Love it so far.

A couple of questions came up though that I was hoping the community could help me with:

1. My investigator got an encounter at an Arkham location sending him to the Dreamlands, and telling him to have an encounter there and immediately return the the location I was in. When I got to the Dreamlands, I received an encounter that, on passing a test, allowed me to return to Arkham. Now, as I understand it, the term "return to Arkham" means step back through any gate to the Other World I am in. If there was a gate to the Dreamlands open in Arkham, could I come back through it, and override the command to return to the original encounter location? Also, what would have happened if I got one of the Other World encounters ordering me to stay at the Other World location on the next turn?

2. If I get an encounter sending me to a location of my choice, but forcing me to have an encounter there. If I choose to go to a location the has an alternative to encounters (for example the shops or the science building), would I have to draw a card, or could I use the location's ability?

Thanks in advance.

1) We are awaiting a FAQ which should address these questions. For now the ruling we have is that there is no holding place for old encounters, no memory means you must execute the instructions on the latest card, so you would be able to leave the OW and come back through a gate with a marker. This would be a neat trick!

2) In this case 'encounter' means drawing a card - note on the board it says "INSTEAD of having an encounter you may...".

#1: Of course, if there is no open gate to Dreamlands -> LiTaS.

#2: Official answers from Kevin Wilson thread has the following quote:

" question: 2) When one encounter card directs you to have an encounter at another location in Arkham, are you allowed to do the Special Ability at that location or must you draw a card and have a "real" encounter to fulfill the original card's direction?

You can use the special ability if you want, or do anything else that you could normally do "instead of having an encounter" (such as using the Handyman's ability from Dunwich.)"

Thank you for the quick answers. I'll be sure to bother you again if anything else comes up...
