Perhaps some sort of mid-career rank/class should just be called Adventurer.
A sort of generic Adventurer type career could be quite useful.

That's how I think careers should be handled loosely and represantive of what the character is doing, not who he is.
I would have no problem with, for instance, someone playing an Apprentice Wizard who's sent out adventuring and wandering and taking Grave Robber, Thief, Scout and Mercenary careers all the while staying an "apprentice wizard" until his adventure is over and he becomes an accolyte.
I don't think a generic "adventurer" career would be a good idea. You're all adventurers, that's the point of being a PC. What kind of adventurer are you, though?

Well the point of generic adventurer is it would represent the kind of skills you would pick up adventuring.
For example, a generic adventurer would have access to survival skills, appraising skills, lore skills and perhaps athletic skills. The kind of abilities used while cimbing trees, force marching through haunted forests, dungeon searching and fighting.
"Adventuring Dilletante" might be a better term.
Agreed on the "generic" career. WFRP is not gurps. It is not a system of a bunch of skills min-maxed to the player's liking. All careers have individual attributes and themes that can't be measured in numbers and statistics (although some people will always attempt to do such..and that's fine..just not my bag baby ![]()
