Hello everyone! Well, almost 3 weeks after Stahleck I decided to write a small report from the tournament and to post my decklist. I'm so late in doing so because I went on a trip through the German Bavaria and later to Wien in Austria, so only now I'm settling down - and surely this caused a blur in some of my plays in the thournament. Nevertheless I will try to give an account of the most important plays in each round.
I placed 33rd place in the Joust Championship, and I know there isn't much reason to read the report. I wrote it anyway because:
- I always wanted to write one
;
- I think I may need some help with deck building/ design and would apreciate some pointers (even if only general) to improve the decklist presented;
- I wanted to have an insight about the general correct strategies vs. the various decks/ houses, as opposed to what I've done, if someone with be so kind as to offer them - I would love to have the insight of my opponents on my plays! Where did I played badly? ![]()
So, without further ado, here's the decklist (before the report, so anyone not interested in the latter won't have to read it) and some explanation about the card choices:

Card Explanations
Plot Deck: everyone knows the City plots, as they played against them ocasionally. However, those of you who have played with them know that it's only two difficulties are 1) the gold they give 2) the starting plot. This deck has problems with income, but has a good starting point in City of Lies, with a total of ten shadow cards in the deck. One in your initial hand transforms the City of Lies in a plot with 5 gold income, and two shadow cards in a plot with 7 gold. That's a lot, and makes the plot good. But the best thing about the City plots is it's awesome versatility. The effects are potent enough to warrant a second activation - thus the inclusion of City of Spiders, and the claim 2 doesn't hurt, either. The Songs of Bael the Bard has proven awesome, also: you have no less than three Traitorous Crow (which would be useless otherwise vs. non-Night's Watch/ Wildling decks) and Varys, Arys Oakheart, and, failing to draw Lion's Gate, the Carrion Birds. That's a total of 8 cards. Surely you will see one of them by the time you'll want to play it. The Fury of the Lion and the Valar Morghulis are pretty self-explanatory.
3x Goldroad, 3x Kingdom of Shadows: GOLD NEEDED! With these plots you get a lot of versatility, but the income is not great at all. The deck cannot function without them, and you must have at least one (preferably two) gold-producing locations as soon as possible - this is the most glaring weakness of the deck. Kingdom of Shadows is also a boon in this deck most of the time. It affects powerfull characters, like Traitorous Crows, Varys, and Tyrion, but also affects King's Landing, for the all important draw. If not for the cost of it, I'd almost have switched the numbers between King's Landing and Golden Tooth Mines.
Toll Gate: many, many reasons. Military Stark/ Wolves, Wintertime Marauders, Goldcloaks, Castellan of the Rock, Carrion Birds, Viper's Bannermen, and of course, the all-important mirror-matched Defenders of the North and The Wildling Horde. All in all pretty common characters, so i expected them to work double-time vs. almost any deck.
Lion's Gate: with Carrion Birds and Arys Oakheart, it's golden. Give a Raven or Ally/ Mercenary trait to a character, shuffle that character in their deck or discard it. Furthermore, it almost stops Baratheon power rush by itself. With You've Killed the Wrong Dwarf it can win you the game placing a power on the right character without Renown. Wether it's a character you control or not is up to you, really. Oh, how I wish I also had deck space for Head of a Dwarf...
3x Condemned by the Council, 2x Climbing Spikes: I hear that Lannisport Brothel, Alchemist's Guild Hall, Golden Tooth Mines, Longship Iron Victory, River Blockade, Scouting Vessel, The Iron Mines, Frozen Outpost, Frozen Moat, Riverrun, Bear Island, Lost Oasis, Kingswoods Trail and his brethren The Black Cells (they seldom come without each other), the new Altar of Fire , Flaming Pitch-Tower, The Dragonpit or Lady Daenery's Chambers are a royal pain you-know-where. All the 6 houses have fearsome locations. Besides, with surprise decks based on The Wall (the neutral one), it could come in handy to have 5 location-hate cards, so I could see one of them in my first 2 or 3 draw phases. Not always happens, but the odds are good.
Skinchanger: evades Venomous Blades (as opposed to Ranger of the Watch) and is immune to Distractions. Sometimes it also functions very well against an Orphan of the Greenblood when the opponent is distracted. Furthermore, it makes Climbing Spikes more reliable.
Traitorous Crow: well, I really expected a lot of Wildling/ Night's Watch mirror matches (hence the three Toll Gates). I wanted these guys in so badly I even included one plot specifically designed to work with them (as Lion's Gate tricks wouldn't be possible). They also were tricons with stealth. Not a bad card, and could substitute a knelt Wildling or Night's Watch character in the Lannister mirror match, messing with the opponent's game, or attack twice via Kingdom of Shadows (which happened quite often during the tournament).
2x Castellan of the Rock, 1x Alchemist's Guild Hall, 3x You've Killed the Wrong Dwarf, no Distractions: well, these were a series of tough choices. The space constraints I spoke about earlier made me go absolutely nuts about the amount of kneeling I wanted/ needed for the deck. After a bit of testing I came to the conclusion that 3 Castellan and Guild Hall were too much limited responses, so I cut the Castellan to 2, instead of the original 3. You've Killed the Wrong Dwarf is more generic than Distraction, so that was what ended up making the deck. My main problem were the non-renown [Noble] characters: Littlefinger could pose a problem, if unchecked for too long, but I felt confident I could deal with him, between Varys, Arys Oakheart and Milk of the Poppy.
1x Melisandre, 3x Tyrion Lannister: They're just too good. Really, you ought to try to play them. Regarding Tyrion, play it without fear because you have a duplicate in your hand - normally I loathe playing with duplicates (well, TRV aside, of course), but in his case I'll make an exception. With Kingdom of Shadows and Renown he speeds the game a LOT, almost as well as Melisandre does. Also, many times, especially vs. other "Shadow" Decks he grows up a lot. Not to mention that he is very versatile, which is my favourite kind of character...
The rest of the deck is pretty obvious: Syrio Forel to abuse King's Landing and Alchemist's Guild Hall (and being a well-rounded character), Mance Rayder to mess with other The North Agenda Decks (particularly The Free Folk) and/ or lower the power count I needed to win, a general lack of 2 STR characters (I expected Martel to be very proeminent through the tournament - guess I was right, eh?
).
I play with only 5 Agendas because I saw no real reason to play a 6th one - The first Wildling Horde is at 0-cost already, and I really saw no benefit of having the +1 STR to my Wildlings - except in mirror match, of course, and I thought I was well prepared for it anyway. Turned out that I was, but I only faced one The North Deck (a Stark with 6 agendas) - but more on that in a while. So I went with The Builders instead, because I didn't want anyone taking my power at almost any costs. In retrospect, I think that was a mistake. After all, only 3 characters gained the benefit of The Builders, barring any tricks with The Songs of Bael the Bard.
So, Saturday: we (the portuguese players) woke up early, having slept about 5 hours for the second consecutive night (we were partying the night before in honor of hour Ser Henrique Cunha that placed second in the Kingsmoot)... and it showed in everybody's humour. But after a short-lived breakfast and a cup of coffee (how I missed the portuguese expressos!) we all became brighter - so to speak. ![]()
As the tourney began I was nervous. A lot. I'd been playing AGoT for the past 2 months only, with some friends I've learned about the game from. Despite the low expectations I had about how the tournament would go (I know for a fact that in card games, tournament experience is crucial) I couldn't shake that constraint in my stomach. Well, I was bound to have a lot of fun, for sure! And I did. I'm sorry I don't have the names of my opponents - I can hint at their nationality only, maybe they can identify themselves!
So here is the report: I am almost sure that the order of my opponents is correct - I know that my score is, anyway - and I apologize for any mistakes.
Round 1 vs. Lannister - Spanish Regional Champion
Well, a mirror match to start the tournament... and a giant (hehe) as an opponent! Your suit was awesome, by the way.
We both setup well, as both of us got GTM. His was a little better, as he got a Toll Gate and a Weaponsmith, and I knew I was going to have to search my location hate, or I would be in trouble - location hate that never came to my hand. Turns out that I never found one of my five cards to shut my opponent's GTM or Toll Gate, but he did destroy my GTM in the first turn with a Condemned by the Council. Although my experience in this game is limited, I was keenly aware that this specific play had won him the game right there, unless I could nullify his card advantage. I made no obvious mistakes that I'm aware of, but it really didn't matter, as turn after turn I was slowly but inexorably overwhelmed by his card advantage, provided by his 2 GTM (the second being marshalled in the 1st turn) - also, no wildlings or night's watch came to aid me. I played that game as a normal Lannister would, but having to grab 25 power to win AND with no card draw - cool, eh? It wouldn't made a difference, actually, because he played flawlessly, and we ended the game at the end of the 10th round I think, him with 15 power, me with 4.
As we concluded the game we talked a bit (the first AGoT report I read was his, and I told him that he was the reason I begun the game as a Lannister - him and Tyrion from the books, obviously
) and I asked what he felt were his chances vs. TurboViper. He confessed what I suspected: a plot selection made of Fear of Winter, Uneasy Truce, Valar Morghulis, Winds of Winter and Fury of the Lion (can't remember the other two, sorry) turned the deck vulnerable to TRV, and one of the reasons I had changed the plot deck to one that could control TRV. How would I knew that I wouldn't face a Martell deck all day?

Round 2 vs. Baratheon Kings of Summer Power Rush - WWDrakey
This game got off to a relatively good start for Drakey, with Knight of Flowers and Wicked Seductress, but mine wasn't so bad either. I was able to semi-control most power grab until the 3rd turn, when he plays a Distinct Mastery on a knelt character of his (I think it was Robert) and a Nightmares on my Defenders of the North, the only power icon character I had on the table. I go "hmm... not looking good" - he proceeds to make a power attack, grabing two of my power, followed by a seductive promise stealing the army. That was quite a blow, because I had been drawing semi-dead cards (if I remember well, I had 1 GTM and 3 Toll Gate on the table, and a lot good they are against Baratheon Power Rush, lol) and only a small quantity of characters. I also had Lion's Gate, but no Carrion Birds or Arys, so no way to abuse them short of removing power. I Valar'd in the 4th turn (Robert got saved by his duplicate) because I felt I couldn't really stem the tide of his 5+ cards in hand and the characters on the table and I managed to draw another Defenders of the North. They got into a semi-nightmare again, with Margaery Tyrell being responsible, and I completely lost the small edge I had gotten with Valar. By the end of this turn Drakey had 8 power in his house card, and 4 on Robert, that went down to 3 on the Dominance Phase via Lion's Gate. He also had another lord in play (can't remember which one). 5th turn was quite uneventful, as I knelt both Robert and the other characters Drakey had with City of Spiders copying City of Sin. Robert went to 2 power on him. In the 6th turn I made the mistake that cost me the game: I revealed The Songs of Bael the Bard, giving the Night's Watch trait to Stannis. Drakey dropped Brienne to acompany the other four characters he had, and in the Marshalling Phase I discard Stannis with a Traitorous Crow that came from the Shadows. A Nightmares wrested my remaining Defenders of the North. I then proceed to initiate an intrigue challenge with him. Drakey was with 11 power by this point, and, surprisingly let it through, and I discarded from him the last card in his hand. So, the only thing left for me to complete my brilliant play was to kneel my Kingdom of Shadows, stand the Traitorous Crow and power challenge him, right? Well, actually, for this plan to succeed I had to have Kingdom of Shadows in play. Which I didn't, because I confused it with Alchemist's Guild Hall. So, I hadn't knelt anyone with it's response, nor I had stood the Traitorous Crow that would let me win the power challenge that I needed to not lose... Guess what happened? Yup, that's right. Drakey attacked with everyone, I defended and lost, before the challenge concluded I removed a power token from Robert with Lion's Gate, and Drakey stood at 13 power. I won Dominance with my Defenders. Drakey's 7th plot: Everyone's Favorite Wedding . I had no Lord or Lady, Drakey had both, so that was game.
To those of you who don't know Drakey: he's a great guy and a lot of fun to play with! I didn't know him before, but I sure am looking forward to meet both him and his girlfriend at Stahleck next year! And here's hoping we can both drink that finnish wine again! ![]()

Round 3 vs. Stark 6 The North Agendas - French
I don't remember well the details of this match, I'm sorry: all I remember is that we both mulliganed, me into a godly hand and him into a really really crappy one. Mine consisted in 2 Traitorous Crow, 2 Toll Gate, 1 GTM, 1 Kingdom of Shadows and 1 Refugee of the Mountains. I drop 1 Toll Gate, the GTM, the Kingdom of Shadows and the Refugees and drew another Traitorous Crow, Arys, another Kingdom of Shadows and a Wildling Horde. Needless to say that by 3rd turn the game was completely under control, as his cards and characters got killed, discarded from the hand and the table, his locations destroyed, etc. etc. A funny thing I remember is that I won at 29 power with him still on 0, because he marshalled 2 Deep Freeze to my house card. He said he was going to make a report, but I forgot the site he told me - if you read this, could you post it, so I can read it? I want to know everyone's opinion on the weekend!

Round 4 vs. Baratheon Kings of Summer Holy Hand Discard - Old Ben
I only knew it was Old Ben I was playing by the end of the match. And I really enjoyed playing with him, but the most funny game we played was the one we played for fun afterwards, when he played a Greyjoy Winter discard deck. That game was pure fun, as I never had my deck completely discarded before the 6th turn! Lucky for me I was a Lannister by that time, and had upwards of 14 cards in hand. The first game, the one which counted for the tournament didn't go very well for him, as I kept mostly everything that mattered knelt. The only relevant play I remember was a well-timed The Songs of Bael the Bard discarding the suddenly recruited Melisandre into the Night's Watch with Traitorous Crow, which would allow Old Ben to grab enough power to win the game. I ended up winning without much opposition in the final turns of the game, as is the way of the Wildlings.
2 - 2
Round 5 vs. Stark Nobles - Claudia - Portuguese
A fellow countrywoman! Well it was bound to happen sometime, afterall there were 9 of us. Her deck is awesome by the way, a special Portuguese Concoction. Lucky for me I already knew the decklist, or I would be in trouble. My setup was very good (which helped) with a Toll Gate (almost useless in this match, you'll see why) a GTM and a Kingdom of Shadows. I had another GTM in hand, along with no less than 3 8 STR armies. Throughout the game, however Claudia proceeded to play Jon Arryn, Tywin Lannister, Robert Baratheon, Stannis Baratheon, Brienne, Arianne Martell, etc... The game was decided when we both played Valar Morghulis at the same time, rendering useless the Bodyguarded Robert she had in play. From there on the game was pretty much settled, as I had a full hand opposed to the two cards Claudia was drawing every turn, and it was only a matter of time until I got to 25 power.
3 - 2
Round 6 vs. Targaryen - Spanish
I can say, hands down, that this was the most frustating AGoT match I have ever had in my short experience playing the game. Initially I thought that I had a good chance of winning upon seeing his house card. But my initial hand was not very good, despite having a GTM. So I shuffled it. Lesson 2 of the day: if you have a GTM in your hand - keep it! Turns out that there was one card that made the difference: King's Landing. Only, it was not on my side, so... the Targaryen player outdrew me maybe 3 to 1 (if not more) over the course of the 10-rounds or so that took him to gather 15 power. I mulliganed into a worse hand, true, but one that held King's Landing. Of course my opponent also had King's Landing, but the odds were good in me having at least the same numer of locations with the King's Landing trait than he did: Lannisport Brothel, Queen Cersei's Chambers, Lion's Gate, Alchemist's Guild Hall vs. Dragonpit (3 copies but only one of them counts), the Red Keep, the Street of X locations, and possibly the hills (that weren't much played by anyone)... Well, this game I kept drawing characters, without as much as seeing another King's Landing location besides King's Landing itself. Once again I was buried in card advantage and good plays from my opponent. The game itself was frustrating because I used to have a good matchup vs. Targaryen burn, but I guess the stars weren't with me that matchup.
3 - 3
Round 7 vs. Baratheon Kings of Summer Power Rush - Italian
By now there wasn't many reasons to continue playing, and my girlfriend was insisting she wanted to go visit Bacharach, eat an Apfelstrudel and taste some wine. But I had come to play, and I really hate quitting. So I promised that I would win or lose as soon as possible, and we would go sightseeing later. Well, turns out that, when I saw his house card, I thought to myself that probably I was going to lose quickly, rather than win quickly. So I sat a little resigned, calculating that in 10 minutes I would be over with the tournament. The deck begged to differ, probably trying to make amends from last round (it probably knew I was furious at it
): I open into a Lion's Gate, a Carrion Bird, 2 Refugee, a GTM, a Alchemist's Guild Hall and a Arys. My opponent was a youngster, and I thought he was annoyed at me at first glance, but all things considered maybe he just didn't speak too much english. I established control from the 1st turn onward, and he really never had much chance, only because the pair Carrion Bird + Lion's Gate. This combo puts a serious wrench in Baratheon Power Rush, if you have a decent backup to it. I don't know if he saw it coming, but I shuffled at least two major characters with it: Stannis and Robert. I think this was what made the difference.
4 - 3
And I was done! My first tournament of AGoT was completed.
I had a great time playing and a spectacular weekend all around. I couldn't end a report without props and slops, of course...
Props:
- Wolfgang aka Thorondor: thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you for putting this up. I'll be atending next year for sure, and considering the amount of money I've spent is saying a LOT. Really: thank you. ![]()
- everyone I've met: from the TO's (which had a lot of patience with the chronically delayed Portuguese crew), to the players (everyone was quite friendly - special mention to Antti, Old Ben, Kabe, Álvaro, Gualdo and the awesome Julián Arquero, with whom I had the most funny game EVER in my first Kingsmoot match), to the staff at Stahleck, and their patience; I guess they still have "Walder Frey" (or some variant thereof) ringing in their ears. And they were very nice all weekend ![]()
- to the location of the tournament: awesome views and sense of quietness all around the landscape
- to the wine
:D you should really try a Wine Tasting whenever you go to Stahleck again
- and finally, to my friends and girlfriend, who taught me the game and kept me company through this adventure. What a ride, guys (and gals)! We are inexperienced, but we'll get better! ![]()
Slops:
- ok, this is hard, but I really can't remember anything at Stahleck that displeased me. Maybe I'll just mention the German Railway System, not for being late - it's quite effective - but because I think it's uselessly complicated - at least from a foreigner point of view.
See you all next year at Stahleck, folks! Or, if the Spanish crew accepts us, maybe we'll see each other in that Spanish - Italian meeting they're planning. Best regards to all!
It was a shame you couldn't come; maybe next year you come sightseeing Europe with your wife and "accidentally" you'll both be in Germany around Stahleck, and you can play with us?
That would be awesome.
) and I promissed my beloved one I would comment his report so...here I am!
) and that wine tasting can be much more fun than I thought! The german landscapes are astonishing and the expressos...well, we're portuguese so I trust you'll excuse me when I say I missed our expresso very much!

Please, say hello to your girlfriend for us Drakey! And just to let you know...we're having losts of cold here...6º!
).
