Ditching Items

By Eodrin, in Talisman Rules Questions

Hello,

I was glad to find such a well documented website and already have found many replies to some of my question thanks to browsing this website. :)

My group of friends and me plaid our second game of Talisman yesterday (first card picked after opening the box was a dragon which kick my friend's druid's ass),

We have a really simple question that might sound easy for experienced players, nevertheless here it is.

Can a player ditch an item whenever he wants to (if nothing explicitly mentioned on the card of course). Or is he stuck with all his items until told otherwise by a card or an event or when there is an excess of space.

For instance my character has 3 swords, i don't want to sell them, I just want to ditch them. Can I simply say, "i ditch one sword" and then put it on the case my character was positioned (or elsewhere ??) ? Or am I stuck with my swords until I find more stuff ?

I had the amulet yesterday and a friend told me that I could not ditch it by myself and therefore that I could not use the crown and that I was stuck, I just wonder if I could ditch it. Then harder questions appear, if you ditch the amulet at the end of the turn can the other payer target you with spells etc, but I would really simply like to know if I can ditch an Item if I wanted to.

Another unrelated question, we were 4 players, of course it is only our second game but we tried our best to go fast and after almost 3 hours noone managed to even touch the crown. Are we wasting to much time in the outer land ? Or can the experience effect drastically decrease duration of a game ?

Many thanks, have a nice day :)

You can ditch at will. For Objects, Lodestone from Highlands and False Grail are ones that you can't ditch, they have specific removal-methods. For Followers, you can't ditch any of the negative ones (Hag, Poltergeist, Haunt, Jester, etc.) at will either, others are fair game.

Experience helps, but approach is more important to decreasing duration. What sort of stats did you guys have at that point? Our basic formula is: main stat (the one you're going to use on the Inner Region) 9+ and a Talisman -> Inner Region. That is, for us, Talisman is a race game. 3-player averages 75 minutes.

Hello,

Thanks Dam, for your quick reply ! Good to know we can ditch at will regular items, which seems normal.

So 9 would be the number to follow, we will try that tomorrow :) , yesterday I finaly went in there with my assassin, who had 6 str and 7 int, it seems weak but 2h30 hours had already past, we did not have lots of creature spawning.

Thanks again have a nice day !

Just keep in mind that if you ditch an item, it goes face up in the space you were on and you may not pick them back up unless you happen to land on the space again. (Page 16 of the rule book)

Also I noticed you said you didn''t want to sell them (the swords). I'm assuming you were playing as the Merchant character from the Reaper expansion then? Because normally you can't sell back items, only that character can.

We end the game around 4 hours..

sometimes it can take longer, because of the craft based characters, or bad luck with drawing cards..

Hey,

I wrote that I didn't want to sell them just in case there was a way to do so and someone would have told me not to ditch them.

I've read the rules prior posting but, surprisingly in the French version of the rule book of the 4th edition we could not find explicitly mentioned that you can ditch an item at any time, they only gave us an example of an excess of slots where you had to ditch an item. So my friends thought that it was a general rule that you need to be able to pick a new item to be able to ditch one of your 4 items... which makes no sense.

Before the reaper expansion we will explore the regular version first and buy expansions once bored. I might come back later with new questions if I can't find an answer in the database.

I'll have a hard time convincing my friends to spend 4 hours for every game though :)

Thanks for your answers,

Everyone can "sell" Objects at the Alchemist in the City.

oh, good point, I hadn't thought of it in that way.

Yes, and why would you want to ditch them anyway? You really don't want your opponents to pick them up, so just hang on to them until you reach the alchemist!

1 Life left, hoping to reach healing, don't want to draw cards? Or just to make room for better cards.

why to ditch ? Because if you are in some field where are you supposed to draw 2 cards for example and you play Sage character and you draw first card and then you see the second is kill for you, you can ditch one item immidiately, which "prevent" you from drawing the second.
