More Syndicate Shenanigans ?

By The Dog of War, in CoC Rules Discussion

So, looking through my stock of Syndi cards again today...I came across "False Papers" - it's a 1-cost Steadfast Syndicate Attachment that says "Attach to a Character" - Exhaust False papers to give attached character a Subtype of your choice until the end of the phase.

Does this actually give them a new Subtype (entirely) - taking away their existing Subtype ? - or does it merely add an "extra" subtype to the character ?

--------------

Secondly, are there any cards in the game that out-and-out REMOVE Subtypes completely from a card ... ? My plan - if such exist - would be some kind of combo with Agency and / or Cthulhu - and being able to remove "Ancient One" - subtypes from those that have it - making them vulnerable to MANY of the games effects that normally cannot target / affect "Ancient One's" ... ?

Blanking works for Ancient Ones I think. So Syndicate (yay, them again) Richard Upton Pickman, painter version, Called by Azathoth for Cthulhu come to mind.

Actually, double check what the Ancient One signifier actually is. I *CONSTANTLY* get this wrong and think it is a subtype or attribute or whatever when it isn't.

I don't have access to the rulebook and faq right now, but I *know* it is covered in there. The Ancient One signifier is definitely covered by the rules of removal / addition, but I can't remember what it is.

Line on page 4 that points to "Ancient One" on Cthulhu has the #7 on it, which corresponds with "Subtype" on page 5. It does get kinda confusing at times, since CoC doesn't mention what get and doesn't get blanked (nothing specific in the rules or FAQ when searching for "blank"), whereas W:I you blank text, but not Traits (= Subtype in CoC) preocupado.gif . Insane does blank the whole text box though.

On text box, FAQ states (p. 12):

"A card’s text box consists of subtypes
and game text relevant to gameplay,
including keywords such as Willpower
and Fast."

So if you blank the text box, subtypes and keywords would be negated. Would also make sense with regard to the Ancient Ones from Ancient Horrors AP (Bokrug, Ghatanothoa, etc.) who state their text boxes cannot be blanked, meaning they keep their everything.

This can actually be quite effective since it allows you to get rid of characters that are otherwise difficult to deal with, e.g. Ancient Ones.

Right - but on the issue of False Papers....when you "give them a subtype" - does that mean you are replacing the existing one, or you are just adding a second one ?

I tend to think it just adds a second one, given the wording ...but I'm not sure if similiar cards with this effect have been FAQ'd, etc. - to actually replace the existing type with whatever you name the new one to be ?

AFAIK, there isn't currently a card effect that _only_ removes a subtype. As others have pointed out the way to do it is to blank the text box which includes the subtypes.

@Rosh87: Umm, was my previous answer unclear? A card can have any number of subtypes. Adding one does not affect any existing subtypes. Unlike keywords, they don't have any effect in and of themselves and thus cannot cancel each other out, so there's no necessity to remove any.

So you could have a card that is an Ancient One, as well as a Gug, a Ghoul, a Dreamer, and an Investigator.

I think what happened was that I posted my comment right AFTER you had just posted yours, Jhaelen....so it appeared I hadn't read or understood what you wrote...when in fact, I hadn't actually seen it ! :-)

Thanks for your comments though - good idea on the Zoog concept someone else mentioned...that's pretty sneaky. Shub-Niggurath....become a Zoog ! Oh look...here's a hungry pack of Cats ! Pay 1.....destroy Shub-Niggurath, the mighty Ancient One.

Fiendish !
