Deck building thread - please comment

By runarm, in Warhammer Invasion Deck Building

Hey all.

I'm fairly new at this game so I'd like to see if I can get a bit of assistance with deck building. Also, the game currently has only a very small audience here in Iceland so I'm trying to put together some decks that would be fun or at least interesting to use in demo games at the FLGS.

I have the core set and the Ulthuan add on, plus one of each of the already released enemy cycle packs so my card choices are limited to cards from those sources.

So the first deck I'd like to request help with is a chaos deck with plenty of corruption - probably nothing new, but I'm fairly green so please bear with me.

Units:

  • Chaos Knights x2
  • Dark Zealot x2
  • Esli'an x3
  • Festering Nurglings x3
  • Melekh the Changer x1
  • Nurgle Sorcerer x1
  • Scheming Cultist x3
  • Servants of Khorne x3
  • Savage Gors x3
  • Valkia the Bloody x1
  • Winged Fury x3

Support:

  • Blood Frenzy x1
  • Cloud of Flies x1
  • Effulgent Boilx x3
  • Horrific Mutation x1
  • Sadistic Mutation x1
  • Shrine to Nurgle x3
  • Bottomless Mine x2
  • Contested Village x3

Tactics:

  • Blood for the Blood God x2
  • Cull the Weak x1
  • Flames of Tzeentch x1
  • Nurgle's Pestilence x1
  • Seduced by Darkness x2
  • Spreading Darkness x3

That's 50 cards total, 10 tactics, 15 support and 25 units. I'm trying to limit the deck to the default 50-card size, although I'm not too stressed about going a couple of cards over.

So, any thoughts or comments? Would you think this deck is playable or are there big problems with it?

R.

Needs less Spreading Darkness unless you can magically produce the resources for it. I used to run with 3x. Now I run with 1...2 if I'm feeling cocky.

Hey, for being new to the game, it doesn't look bad. Though I do have some suggestions:

-Most people on here will tell you that every deck should run these three cards (thankfully, with the base set and ulthuan, you have playsets of them all) and in all but the slightest of cases (maybe empire, who can sub in Derricksburg Forge), they'd be right.

Add these to your deck, and you will see immediate improvement:

Warpstone Excavation x3 (the drawback is negligible in actual play)
Contested Village x3 (You have the right idea with this)
Innovation x3 (Lets you skip ahead a turn pretty much, very key.)

These cards just add efficiency, and help protect against resets, which will ruin you if your resource base is soley units. They are prevalent especially when you play against Dwarf (which you will play against constantly if you play with competitive players)

-Card Draw is important, especially when you're Chaos and you need to have an answer for everything. As a general guideline, 4 cards a turn is probably fine, too little and you'll get steamrolled, and too much and you'll deck out.

-You have the right idea on the corruption stuff: Effulgent boils is key, as is Seduced by the Darkness. I agree with qwertyuiop that Spreading Darkness is a little more trouble than it's worth. Stick with the cheap easy answers. Good call on flames of Tzeench. Festering Nurglings is also good, as is Scheming Cultist.

Hope this helps you out some.

Thanks for the replies guys.

I've added the warpstone excavation and as was pointed out it has negligible effect on gameplay. I'm trying out innovation as well. Since I only have one set of Contested Village I've sometimes found myself substituting Dark Abyss for it when I've been playing the chaos deck against other decks that I'm providing as well - see below - and I've found that reducing the opponent's deck each turn can be a big help if the discarded cards are the right ones :)

Next up are the Empire and Orcs

The first is an empire deck with plenty of buildings and I've been thinking about adding in one or more Treasure Vaults (3 developments to add power to each building card), but I'm not sure what to cut or if it's worth it. I've been using Derricksburg in stead of Contested Village and in play it has worked out fine. I've also been thinking of adding Manaan Take You from March of the Damned (which I just recently got), but the high cost and easy method of countering it has kept me from adding it.

Units:

  • Black Knights of Morr x3
  • Bright Wizard Apprentice x1
  • Free Company x2
  • Gold Wizard Acolyte x2
  • Gryphon Legionnaire x3
  • Johannes Broheim x1
  • Knights of the Blazing Sun x3
  • Peasant Militia x1
  • Pistoliers x2
  • Reiksguard Knights x2
  • The Greatswords x2
  • Wilhelm of the Osterknacht x2

Support:

  • Battle Standard x1
  • Church of Sigmar x2
  • Derricksburg Forge x3
  • Forgotten Cemetary x2
  • Griffon Standard x3
  • Knight Training x1
  • Temple of Shallya x1
  • Temple of Verena x2

Tactics:

  • Called Back x3
  • Demoralise x3
  • Forced March x2
  • Franz's Decree
  • Judgement of Verena x1
  • Surrender! x2
  • Will of the Electors x1

And then the Orcs. I'm not completely sold on the Savage Rage card and I've been considering adding the You'se Bigga cards from March of the Damned.

Units:

  • Black Orc Squad x3
  • Crooked Teef Goblins x3
  • Followers of Skarsnik x3
  • Forest Goblins x3
  • Ironclaw's Horde x1
  • Lobber Crew x3
  • Marauding Giant x3
  • Night Goblins x1
  • Savage Boyz x2
  • Wyvern Rider x2

Support:

  • Choppa x2
  • Contested Village x3
  • Grimgor's Camp x1
  • Savage Rage x3
  • Scrap Heap x1
  • Squig Pen x3
  • Totem of Gork x1

Tactics:

  • Boar Attack x2
  • Favour of Mork x3
  • Pillage x1
  • Smas-Go-Boom! x1
  • Troll Vomit x1
  • Waaagh!
  • We'z Bigga x2

Quests:

  • Smash'em All! x1

So again I ask for your comments and advice :)

Treasure Vaults x1, Contested Stronghold x(2, probably), City Gates x1 can only help your Empire Deck with their killer synergy. Your support section needs some serious work. Right now, you're resource starved. You'll not have the chance to the G. Legion in response like you want.. and if you manage to have the resources to do it, it's because everything else in your hand is too expensive or too useless, but it doesn't matter because you'll be losing the game. (I know the legionnaire is not the cornerstone of your strategy, it's just an example) I do like that you're using the BWA aka Harry Potter.

I'll comment on the Orc deck later.

Finally. Warpstone is awesome. If you're having a negative experience with it, there are probably other factors involved. I don't use it in my Order decks, but I find that Dark Elves and Chaos can't really operate without it.

Orcs, orcs, orcs. Are you not feeling the snotling pump wagon or spider riders? They're pretty fast. 3 squig pens is kinda heavy. If you have Troll Den, maybe try one. I can think of at least two Orc heroes who could combo with it in the kingdom for fun results.

I've been hesitant to use the contested stronghold due to it's cost, but I'll give it a go. Treasure vaults definitely not a problem so I'll try that as well - was planning on it at some point, I've just been a bit hesitant to use cards that outright require developments to justify their use. City gates I already tried and I really did not like it. If I could use just any card I'd be fine with it because then I'd have a choice as to what card to use, but to be forced to choose the top deck card and posibly losing some key asset just doesn't sit well with me.

I've tried it in my chaos deck now and I quite like the Warpstone card. Wouldn't mind having another set, but buying a whole extra core set for a set of those and a few others I wouldn't mind extra copies of is just to damned expensive right now.

Don't have either the spider riders or the snotling wagon cards - I'm guessing they are from the corruption cycle battle packs? The squig pens have actually been paying off pretty well. I'm keen to try troll den, but haven't had the opportunity yet.

Yeah. They're in the corruption cycle. Ugrok and Urguck both have abilities that could benefit from Troll Dens.
