A Non-Sterile Space Marine

By Wayfinder, in Deathwatch

After my Black Templar Tactical Marine finally got off Scintilla after a grueling mission to destroy an Eldar presence, an examination by a churgeon tells him that he's not sterile (strangely, why that had anything to do with healing my wounds that I had on my arms I do not know - what were you checking down there for, doc?).

What are the implications of this? I think it's got to be a mutation of some kind, and maybe it's possible. I went through an ancient Webway Gate along with my Kill-Team to the underbowels of Gunmetal City and faced down with some enemy psykers in the process of destroying the Eldar enclave, or maybe it's a radiation thing, I don't know.

I am about to meet up with one of my Chapter's ships in the next session. I'm wondering if I should bring that up?

Depends on your groups view of what a Marine that can bear children 'is' in your 40k. As for implications, most of them are going to be role playing based, IMHO. Ask your GM specifically if your character knew of your 'potency state' previously or if it's just you guessing.

It could be a mutation, or effect of the warp in your setting- though how radiation would reverse sterilization is beyond my meager medical knowledge. I'd look at how you think your character would respond to the news- if he thinks he's now been mutated, tainted by the warp in some way, would he tell the team's apothecary to get treatment for fear of other mutations or problems? Would he cover it up and say nothing because he fears breaking from the herd?

Next, is it impacting the way the character thinks? Is he less capable in the field because of it? Is he less capable in the field because he's worried about it, and not neccesarily because he's gazing at chicks? Would he be shamed by his distraction and not want to say anything, or so concerend with his brothers well being that he takes himself out of the action until he can settle down?

It all depends on your character and the setting, but sounds like a fun time - I'd really think about asking just what the doctor was doing checking you out in that way! happy.gif

From what the OP stated, I think he means "impure" when he says non-sterile. I don't think it has anything to do with his ability to procreate.

talk to your GM. simply ask him if he's changing the fluff as a plot device for a future game hook (possible) or just screwing with you. as a black templar, i'd think that you'd probably want to castrate yourself since this is an abnormality that may distract you from your holy mission of persecuting those who stand against the emperor. i'm not trying to be sarcastic with the previous sentance but serious; the templar fluff has them doing penance for minor infractions. having a mutation that gives you impure thoughts unrelated to your duty to the god emperor should TROUBLE a black templar immensely. a space wolf, on the other hand, might enjoy it. it all depends on how close you're playing your chapter's views.

non-sterile can be both an euphemism referring to the ability to procreate as well as to carrying some sort of infection. It might conceivably refer even to Tyranid infection of some sort....

Are you sure you got examined "down there" ?

Yeah, I think you should probably ask your GM what he meant, as sterile also means "a state of being free from biological contaminant", which seems more relevant after an encounter with Xenos than your ability to procreate. You might have picked up some kind of contaminant while in the mission that might be affecting your healing rate for example.
