Runebound buying order and Midnight

By rust00, in Runebound

Hello runebound players :)

For some time I have had my eye on Runebound and there more I read up on it, the more I want to get it and I am a big descent fan :) Anyway, wanted to know if there should be a sequence in which the Runebound products should be bought or I can roll with a expansion maps and It will have everything included in it or I need the base set?

Second question about Runebound Midnight, wanted to know if this game will be printed again or something, because so far I would like to get all the available expansions for Runebound and Midnight is seriously OVERPRICED and I could not find it here in the products section, can anyone share their wisdom on this particular expansion?

Thank you in advance for you answers :)

All of the expansions to Runebound are designed to work with the base game, so there's no particular order they need to be bought in. The Big Box expansions give you everything you need to play a new adventure, even replacing the board itself with a new one (not expanding the map but replacing it.) The smaller card box expansions are mostly designed to be mixed into the base game decks (which means, except for those which boost the items deck, they can't be used with other big box expansions.)

There are some things that can be mixed and matched - heroes from an expansion can be used on the base game map, for example - but for the most part each expansion is it's own adventure. I find this only increases replayability by providing wildly different experiences each time, but your experience may vary.

Midnight is not being reprinted, ever. FFG has said as much. That expansion received mixed reviews. It was a very big departure from the standard Runebound atmosphere, and a lot of people apparently didn't like it. Those who did like it, liked it a lot, of course. It's sort of like one of those fancy artsy movies - not everyone gets it, but those who do adore it. I don't own Midnight myself, but from what I've read about it, it does seem intriguing. The one thing I don't like (and the reason I don't bemoan missing it) is the Night Lord player. If I wanted to play 1 vs many, I'd play Descent. Runebound's primary charm to me is the free for all (generally non-hostile, in our group) adventure.

Midnight is also the one expansion where NOTHING, not even the heroes, can really be used with the rest of the Runebound franchise. Midnight was darker, gear was harder to find and the heroes weaker than most. Within Midnight it was fine since those challenges were also scaled down, but a Midnight hero in regular Runebound stood a pretty poor chance of doing well enough to compete.

WOW, superb answer, thank you very much, now I know everything what I need to know :)
