New player has a couple rule questions...

By China Dave, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

Hi, I finally picked up Arkham Horror and I love it! My son and I played yesterday to get a feel for the rules before I take it with me to our next game night, and I had a couple of questions that I could not find in the FAQ. I'm guessing because the answers are simple, but I'd like to know anyway. By the way, my son is only 6, but he really likes the game a lot!

Question 1: If you don't want to evade a monster, can you just move into the area and proceed directly to combat? There were several times when evading was not possible or not the best choice, and it seemed like if the investigator just wanted to fight he or she shouldn't have to try to hide and then take damage.

Question 2: Do skills and allies count toward being discarded when you are Lost in Time and Space?

Question 3: When a gate and monster appear due to a Mythos or Encounter card, does the investigator get sucked through the gate before or after the monster attacks? (Like, does he get sucked into the Other World and that's where the monster is, or does the monster come through to Arkham, attack him, and THEN he gets sucked into the gate?)

Thanks in advance for your help!

#1: You don't have to evade: you can go directly to combat.

#2: Allies and Skills do not count as items for discarding.

#3: Go strictly to other world (and be delayed). The monster stays behind on the gate.

Hi China Dave!

And welcome to the Carnival! gran_risa.gif angel.gifYou've bought one of the most enchanting games ever, so congrats ::nodding::

As far as your questions are concerned:

1. Not so sure about what you meant. If you and a monster (or more monsters) share the same area, you have to deal with them. You can evade them, or fight them, as you like it. If you're in the same area with a monster and want to go to fight a different monster in a different area, you have to evade the first one in order to be able to reach the second one

2. Skills and allies are not considered items, and so they are not discarded when LiTaS. You can cross-check this here: AH Base rules, pag 16, third column, the paragraph starting with the bold-typed "Important"

3. The first to appear is the gate, then from the gate emerges the monster(s). So the investigator is sucked through the gate before the monster can deal him any damage

Great! Thanks for the help! That's the way we played it, but I wanted to be sure.

I'm definitely going to pick up some expansions. More questions may follow. :-)

Don't forget that you only discard items when you're lost in time and space as a result of being reduced to 0 sanity or 0 Stamina in an Other World. That is, you don't discard items when you fail a combat check against a dimensional shambler, for instance.

Heh... If you want to boost the base game difficulty before adding in expansions check page 46 of the Ancient Ones in the fan creations thread.

I wouldn't try this until you've mastered the base game (know where all the good resources are, and understand how to consistantly beat the Doom Track, I don't want to say anything more than that).
