Theon Greyjoy newbie question

By Yusaku, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

Hello,

New to the game... and i would like to ask a q about Theon Greyjoy card:

Does his effect is global or just triggers when he attacks?

My assumption is that his effect is global and triggers everytime an attack is won by 4 or more.

(the reason i make this q is because he seems to me to be quite powerfull card!!)

Welcome!

He's ability is passive effect. You know because there is no "phase" word in bold at the beginning of his text. And that means this happens automatically, whether you want it or not in point 5.

1. Determine winner of challenge
2. Challenge result is implemented
3. Reward for unopposed challenge is awarded
4. Renown is awarded

5. Passive effects

Great!!

Thank you very much!

(Isn't that card to powefull btw in a Greyjoy kind of deck where they can attack unopposed?)

Which

He's a good card, but not remotely "too powerful."

Not really. Two reasons: #1: The point of the unopposed challenges in GJ is to win with small numbers. If you are going to commit to winning by 4 as well as the unopposed, you are going to kneel out most of your defenders - leaving yourself open to lose by 4 or more as well. #2: Theon's ability essentially lets the person who lost choose their least useful character or location to discard. Which card Theon takes from the loser is entirely under the loser's control. There is also the point that as soon as you run out of characters or locations, Theon doesn't do much. If the loser chooses "character" when there are no characters to discard - oh well.

He's a good card, but not remotely "too powerful."

I can see your reasoning!

Thank you again :)
