Missionary character...as a ships chief?

By Captain Harlock, in Rogue Trader

We have randomly generated a new character for a friend that games with us infrequently and we have put him at the head of the dynastys second ship (A vagabond class prospecting mining vessel). Generally we randomly roll a new players origin path and this new character has rolled the following:

Child of the Dynasty
Vaunted
New Horizons-Seeker of truth
Dark Voyage
Reknown
Missionary

This as led to a few discussions on the kind of character this missionary is. Child of the dynasty and vaunted sort of makes sense. He could be part of the extended family of the dynasty and trained for a position. However from then on it becomes a bit odd ...Seeker Of Truth? Whats he expecting to find amongst the stars? Dark Voyage? Reknown?

How has this man/woman, a scion of the dynasty become a missionary and the head of an armed mining ship? What would a dynasty scion be doing becoming a missionary and the head of a mining vessel

Any Ideas?

Dark history of the Dynasty; in the past his ancestors did something that would be considered borderline heretical. He finds hints about it in the family archives, becomes fixated on finding out the truth. Finally uncovers it, and becomes a Missionary to purge the historical stain on his family's honour.

Sounds good, as there is indeed a Very Dark history to the dynasty The line was tainted by psykers, and the ship being a cursed space hulk hull exacebbated this leading to its Rogue Trader being possessed. The dynastys ship was impounded for 400 years on the orders of the inquisition as the last hereditary scion went on a penitent crusade putting his wealth and influence at their service. Having gained forgiveness for their their impurity, a new warrant scion has arised, albeit one that spent most of his life in a schola progenium, a child of the creed, not knowing his lineage and being relentlessly tested in his purity. (So much so he is now partly resistent to psychic attacks.)

I think the problem is why is the missionary on the mining ship?

The mining ship is what kept the Dynastys holdings largely intact after four hundred years (Infact the mining ship is now partly owned by an imperial gorvenor- payments in arrears - ship trait). The Dynasty has just recently reaquired it, and here on there is there this missionary at its helm, which comes from the same family. I think the main problem is why would a missionary (one that may have a sense of purging historical stain on the dynasty) be on a 'mining ship'

Also what effect would a missionary have on the miners? would they all be a bit puritan or pilgrim fatherish? Or would they resent such a individual?

The end result can vary widely depending on what particular branch of the Ecclesiarchy has raised him. Though I'd think that a puritan branch would probably fir poorly. Space mining is likely be a demanding, risky job and highly specialized job, sort of like what you'd find on an oil platform.

Which means the crew is likely to be quite heavy with smart, though and strong-willed poeples. It's unlikely they would find prayers, ritual penances and the like a good way to recover from their work. Which means a puritan missionry, focused on paying home to the Emperor and keeping away from human foibles such as boose and brothels is likely to make himself unpopular very soon.

What would fit the best would for him to consider that 'every pound of ore is a prayer to the Emperor'and doesn"t poke his nose at what they're doing in their off-time as long as they perform well. That sort of devotion by work is in my opinion what would get the best results. A puritant who replaces girly posters by Imperial incons, runs a dry ship because 'a drunken mind is a gate to heresy', impose the miners to spend their frre time in prayers an religious ceremonies and the like is likely to see his ship's morale plummet into mutinery quite fast.

What is the Missionary's cooking specialty. any special dish credited to him?

Nutri slurry. Sometimes if he's feeling generous and given to indulgencies maybe some corpse starch gruel.

Maybe.
