Character Strategy = Mechanical Game?

By Jaegerpenguin, in Android

A question for anyone who has played multiple games of Android.

Do you witness, within your groups, an overemphasis on using character specific strategies like avoiding certain places or ensuring to collect certain game components? It would seem to me that an overemphasis on playing a character like a math equation would reduce variability in games and make it less interesting. Does anyone out there ignore the strategy cards and just go with it?

I've played 3 complete games so far and a couple of one weekers. Most of those the initial setup/explantion took around one hour. So by the time everyone is ready to play I didn't feel like pulling a hang on another 5 minutes I need to read my strageties, so I never read them. I had fun, and although I didn't win I didn't do horribly, points wise.

The last game I played was a two player game where we both controlled 2 characters. We had both played before, so I took the time to read my tips. I was playing Caprice and Raymond. I did better with Raymond as I was putting all me eggs in one basket and using Caprice as an experiment. So I avoided all of Raymond's memory card triggers where possible and tried to stay out of the nightlife locations. With Caprice I jumped into a number of seedy/major locations and got punished, but I had a lot of fun doing it.

I've got a real problem with getting enough cards. I'm always too focused on following up leads, that I forget the rest of the game, and in this case I still didn't get the guilty hunch as I had an alibi and two surprise witnesses on my guilty hunch. Anyway. I've played the game without using the tips and lost and enjoyed it, I've played with the tips and lost and enjoyed it. I'm not big on having to win, I like winning and if I'm in contention at the end of the game it is definately a different experience, but I also like to experience the content so most likely I'll play a game with Raymond and hit up a few nightlife locations just to see what will happen

I've wondered about when would be an appropriate time to remove the tips. Perhaps, if your looking to challenge your memory, you could stop looking at the tips after you've played a character 5 times or more. Not looking at the tips would also make a good handy cap when playing with new players. That is, unless you are playing constantly and no longer need to read the tips : )
