Hey all,
I was going to write an article of sorts with a bunch of combos in it for the current meta, but it got to be too late, and also I'm intensely lazy. Instead, thought I'd just make a forum post and see what you think. Also, is anyone even interested in reading articles that aren't spoileriffic anymore? I have a few that I could post at some point, though one is terribly out of date now that KotS is out, so I intend to rewrite it and collect the results of it (it involves playing a round-robin tournament between 7 unique decks). Anyway, on to what I think are some strong combos that I'd like some criticisms of!
Art of Diplomacy + The Stormlands - The Stormlands is such a strong card, especially with King Renly drawing after every win. Add in the Art of Diplomacy to make a really, really strong character for no extra cost. I'm currently using this in a treaty deck with Greyjoy, giving me, for example, a Distinguished Boatswain of strength 8 (when no cards in shadows) who costs a whopping 1 gold. I'm also a huge fan of putting Art of Diplomacy on King Balon and getting a strength 8, nearly unstoppable juggernaut. . .of destruction. Finally, The Stormlands also makes all the power struggle decks at least claim 2 in power challenges, which with 2-power-challenges-Bob, can result in a very, very fast win.
Motley Crewman + Frostfangs - Motley Crewman doesn't affect just the Greyjoy discard characters. This combo in a winter deck can tear through an opponent's deck incredibly quickly, especially if you get one or two Wharf Rats on their side. I still haven't found a way to really make GJ discard competitive, but it *is* incredibly fun. You can also use Jojen Reed in a treaty deck and get + 1 or 2 cards with him, giving you the chance to get that many more power.
Eastwatch-by-the-Sea + Your opponent's Beric Dondarrion - A very quick way to get rid of Beric. It is also worth it for decks that tend to grab power on their chars faster than on their house (infamy, renown) - you can more quickly grab the power back from them by moving it to their house card. Finally, when preparing for Valar, this can be a quick couple-power saver, potentially.
Altar of Fire + . . .well, nothing. Altar of Fire is simply broken.
This one doesn't really count as a combo, but the cards just synergize incredibly well together:
King Robb's Companions, Guilty, Feigned Retreat, The Red Keep. A Stark murder deck seems like it could potentially be incredibly strong right now - killing off your opponent's big armies quickly and efficiently with 2-claim plots, plus Feigned Retreat, plus murdering cards - it could be an interesting game.
By the way, anyone notice how a lot of the above suggested treaty agendas? I've decided to try to conquer Mount 6-agenda by making them win in less time (if they're going to win), but also maybe having a shot at winning by powering with the best cards from two different houses. I don't suppose it'll work, but we'll see. Anyone think it could work consistently enough to bother?
