The Warhammer Universe for Beginners & Online Resources

By Talmek, in Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay

Good Evening WFRP Fans...

I purchased the Core Set on a whim at my FLGS and decided I would begin reading about the system. In the process I'm really enjoying the environment but I'd like to learn more about the history and the background of the Warhammer world.

Does anyone have any resources to share (either online or other WFRP products) that can offer more history and insight to the world?

Thanks!

Well, the whole WFRP v2 line of books had a LOT of background info. Tome of Salvation, Tome Of Corruption and Heirs Of Sigmar were particularly helpfull.

Other than that, there's the novels. Allthough there's so many of them you really need to pick a subject before I can reccomend anything.

I'm not sure about online resources though.

For online resources, there's the Warhammer Fantasy Lexicanum

A bit of a starved goat compared to the titanic Warhammer 40,000 Lexicanum, but it's somewhat useful nonetheless.

When I started playing in the world for 2nd edition, I realized that i needed to learn the basics. Here they are:

Setting: dark reniassance "Germany."

Bad guys: opportunistic humans, beastmen, mutants, vampires, dark elves, greenskins (goblins & orcs), necrarchs (vampires & liches)

Big bad evil forces in the world: 4 chaos gods (i.e. their cults), chaos-worshipping beastmen, mutants, vampires, dark elves (druchii), powerful humans.

I learned a ton by simply looking at the Warhammer Fantasy Battles army books, but the novels and comic books are a great way to get a feel for it.

Making it different from every D&D game you've ever run is probably what you're looking for right?

Welcome to the Warhammer world!

I agree with the previous posters that the 2nd edition books are a great resource in addition to the Warhammer Fantasy Battles army books (any edition).

I've always been a fan of maps to help give the warhammer world perspective and because of that i've gathered all the ones i can find into a resource site which might help you.

Most of the content on the site is for Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay 3rd Edition, but there is a very comprehensive map section for Warhammer in general as well.

I have collected few sites on my site. You should definitely check some of them. There are great fan sources that give good info:
