Question - Bits Free Game ? ? ?

By Oathwin Oakheart, in Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay

Anyone playing Warhammer with out all the bits?

If so, how well is it working?

This may not be the best place to say this . . .

( In fact I was attacked with digital pitch forks and torches for saying this on the WotC / D & D forums. )

I hate bits and box sets, I prefer books.

Not sure why, could be my OCD.

The group I play with use rule books, dice and large size graph paper for D & D 4E, Pathfinder and A Song of Ice and Fire.

Our extra sets of dice are used instead of miniatures.

This works great and keeps the table cluter down.

Just to be clear . . .

I did not intend this post to attack anyone who enjoys bits or likes box sets.

Thanks.

We did this right out of the gate, but the design of the character sheets was not conducive to that. I redesigned the character sheet with fatigue & stress tracking (put magic tape over it so you can write on it with pencil) and added a few other things (total soak, etc.) to the wounds area.

My players were 50/50. The boardgamers like the chits..the roleplayers did not. (even though it's not a boardgame, this spoke volumes).

We did switch from chits to acrylic gems however as they were easier to manage. It's just sad that if you bump the table, you don't know what the hell was where and how many were there. It's a hole in the system still for me that we fixed with paperclips.

I also put the party sheet vertically in a stand (with paperclips) so you can see it for all FIVE players.

Thanks for the reply.

This helps . . .

I don't want to invest in the books and dice if it just won't work well.

Sounds like it can be done.

On a side note . . .

It's to bad Omens of War is only going to be available in a box set format.

Looks good.

Well, if you wait until November/December, there's the Player's Guide which will be releasing. (along with the GM's Guide, and the Creature Guide)

Aside from being a refined and updated version of the core rule set, it is also designed to allow you to play the game with as many or as little of the components as you want - meaning that it allows you to play the game in a more traditional way, if that's what you prefer.

As I understand it, all the new supplements releasing after the Guides will be in the same format. You'll still get all the bits and pieces that come in the box, but you wont' be forced to use them if you don't want to.

Personally I don't see the point in not using them. That is, from all accounts 2nd edition was not broken and you'll have a much cheaper time finding those books second hand than buying an all new system which you don't really intend to use.

For me the interesting new game play mechanics are what encourage me to purchase the material. I have been GMing for 20 years and in that time I've found that new and interesting game mechanics can be a lot of fun and add another dimension to the game. (or they can be a hassel, but you never know if you don't give them a run around the block) I encourage you to try it for a month before deciding whether or not to keep it. You may find that some mechanics work really well and are fun to play, while others are not - nothing says you have to go All or Nothing; sometimes the best idea is to find a happy medium.

A few questions for you, since I've been considering replacing the light weight cardboard chits with something more visually appealing.

What kind of "acrylic gems" do you use, and where do you get them?

Would you consider uploading the character sheet you designed?

What kind of stand are you using for the Party Sheet?

Thanks in advance!

We've done plastic treasure coins and acrylic gems (plastic wedding ice): www.google.com/images

This is the most recent version of the character sheet (bastardized until we see what FFG's got in store for the upcoming player's guide character sheets):
