Some questions before I buy the game

By Yog-Hurtoth, in Tannhauser

Hi,

I'm interested in buying this game, but I'd like to know a couple of things before I do:

-Are the teams well balanced?

-I've read in a couple of different reviews about this game that it doesn't involve much strategy. Does this change when you add expansions?

-How good is the game without any expansions?

Any comments on these issues would be great.

I personally had my game up for trade, after I tried the revised rules it changed. It's now one of my favorite games. I usually only play strategy or tactical games and I have no issues with this title. The expansions are not a must but I find they had more versatility and replay value. Choosing your set up is part of the fun.

Thanks for your comments, Grayle:)

So if I understand you correctly, there is more strategy involved with the revised rules? In that case, the reviews I read were probably based on the original rules...

It's not the most strategic game I ever played but to me it feels like there is enough to keep me playing. The revised rules changed the victory point system and added a command point system which feels much better. When I played with the old rules, I never wanted to touch the game again. My brother wanted to try Tannhauser I kept saying no, I caved in when I saw there was revised rules. Glad they worked out. the manual is much easier to refer to. A must in my opinion is to keep the tokens really organized if not set up is a mess.

Cool, I'll probably buy it then.

I have a few more questions, though:

How "healthy" is this game? This might be a silly question since a new expansion just came out, but does it seem like the game is popular enough for ffg to keep releasing new expansions?

Will out-of-print figures be reprinted?

on Tactics and and Skill level in the original rules, Reich had strait forward and easily mastered style of game play, where Union called for a more developed player to get the most out of them and allowed for a wider style of tactics. the new rules evens up the skill levels for both the Core game teams but Union encourages more tactical play where Reich lets you get away with the many of the same basic but brutaly effective tactics or to try something with a bit more style, Expansion Character and the Troops Pack let you get fancy with Reich or indulge your inner Thug even more. the Union Expansion Character and the Troops Pack let you do more interesting stuff and give you options to neutralise some of the simpler Reich tactics.

The Matriarchy from the first board expansion has some elements locked in (eg their is one character that for now you must have), but the options can be palyed with to suit most skill levels of player, once you find the combs to suit the players skill level and style of play.

New Major Expansion is coming with a new Map and options for the existing Characters & Troops and a new Expansion Character for each team is coming.

Two Expansion Characters are currently out of stock, one was originally a Limited Release, the other is the first Expansion Character

Thanks for your comments:)

I'm assuming that the first expansion character is Yula, what's the name of the Limited Release?

Wolf was the limited pre release character. FFG has him listed as not yet published so i am hoping for an actual release somewhere around dedalus map pack this winter :)

I've ordered the base game and Yla now, should have them in a few days.

Thanks for your help!

Game has a lot of strategy. With all the equipment packs and scenarios there is a lot with just the base set.

Not the most strategy, but anyone who says it has weak strategy, either has boring friends or does not play the game with its depth. Each faction has there own unique tactics and power moves.

I hope you enjoy the game, they did say they would release Wolf with the new expansion but I would like to hear more news on it.
