Exitus Rifle too short range?

By Adaras, in Dark Heresy Rules Questions

Cheers everybody

I have a small question: isn“t the Exitus rifles standard range really short? The exitus rifle is like the pinnicle (or how you spell it) of sniping weapons. But the sniper rifle in into the storm has a 20 meter longer range than the exitus. I always thought that Vindicare always pulled off shots like from like 2 km away, but the max they can hit in ascension is 600 m on exstreme range.

So what do you guys/girls think should it be more? If so how much do you think is a good idea?

Actually, extreme range is 800m (4x Optimal Range), and with the telescopic sight it's fairly easy to pull off shots at that distance.

I would say that the range for the weapon in the stats would be those used during combat, where as 1-2km shots would be covered narratively.

Still it's 200m less than a Nomad which strikes me as odd.

The telescopic sight is not really worth mentioning. It's inferior to a red dot laser sight and getting the Marksman talent (no penalties due to long and extreme range). And I dare say anyone worthy of induction to the Vindicare should get Marksman as well as the Called Shot talents.

When I made mine up many months before Ascension I gave it a 350m range, which is pushing the very boundaries of contemporary projectile weapon marksmanship to hit with any kind of consistency. The thing that always made them scary was the ammunition and a comparatively high magazine capacity

What Millandson says makes sense I think

But MKX the Barrett M107 has a effective range of 1,829 m and a maximum range (exstreme range) of 6,812 m.

But like Millandson says it would make combat kinda a hell for the ones being a shot at, having to walk over 6 km of land (at least) while being shot at by a elite sniper. But then again it is the Vindicare thats their thing

Agreed. I think the intent (IMO) was to keep the Exitus at least somewhat balanced for combat. For those really epic shots, the ones that can only be pulled off by the most highly trained and well-equipped snipers (like the Vindicare), there is no reason you couldn't do it narratively. happy.gif

Reasoning is, I had it pegged as a dedicated sniper rifle to be used on meat-targets, not necessarily an anti-material weapon for lighting up fuel drums, immobilising light vehicles and cruise missile carriers. For that, you dont need a huge .50cal weapon (they are huge at about 15kg loaded- the Exitus is only 9kg) and can get away with a much lighter round like a .300 magnum, .338 or similar that is consistantly good to about 1000m and has some consistantly better ammunition for long distance shooting. .50 BMG or heavy stubber ammo in 40k as we know it, can vary in its quality depending on which army surplus its fallen out of, that is something which typifies the Exitus in that it does use rare match grade ammunition and other more esoteric rounds.

I've had one used in-game in my format for the weapon, it kills arseloads of people, of course, to deal with this level of threat the enemy responded in-kind with ordinance weapons on the snipers position and well, 1 fate point burnt later, a broken exitus and gear, sniping isn't a glamourous occupation as it first appealed to one PC at least.

I do actually have a dedicated anti-material rifle in my game which essentially fires a single assault cannon shell that has a longer range, but its not trotted out much as its very heavy. It did its job of dropping a Malfian banker out of the skies in his personal flyer with great success.

Well I am not an expert on weapons. But it is just compared to the other sniper weapons, the Absolution from into the storm, and the Nomad from Inquisitors handbook then the Exitus is an anti material rifle. The only things that go beyond its AP is like the Las cannons or Melta.

but heck its 40k, when you deal with dudes like Space marines you kinda need to be anti Material/personal haha :P

Poor guy you player, he should not have given away his position, that is kinda embarrasing for a Vindicare :P
