The Greatest Fear ... Is Fear of the Unknown

By The Dog of War, in CoC Rules Discussion

Hello all. Though my normal urge is to write these varied questions in a single posting of about 5 or so ...(total questions) ....several good natured members of the forums suggested I separate them - for easier reading and answering. I will do so...but I hope nobody (else) gets mad that there will be 4 or 5 postings just from me - each on a different rule issue. As I said before, in defending my usual practice, in past forums I've been at - multi-posting (when you could just put all things of the same general theme / topic in one posting) is usually "not good forum manners". But if this is how ya'll want it...then this is how I shall present it ! cool.gif

The Greatest Fear.... Is Fear of the Unknown

Neutral, 1-cost card - Event // Disaster // Madness (Secrets of Arkham)

Response : After a character goes insane, its controller discards 2 cards at random from his hand. Then, for each event or support card thus discarded, you may place 1 success token on a story.

This is probably a simple question - and easily answered. I myself often "know" - or "suspect" that a card is played a certain way - but since I am still relatively new to the game, I like to check with you vets and other forum gurus to "see for sure". Anyways....this card does not specify any kind of targeting restriction - in other words, it does not seem to restrict it's play to JUST your Opponent's characters (though this is normally when you would play it, I would think).

The way it is written, it seems you could...for example...start your hand with Victoria Glasser, Magah Bird (1), Hastur Resource (x3 - imagine they are some cards you don't want and are fine with resourcing to start the game), The Greatest Fear (x1), Victoria's Loft (x1), Terrifying Visage (x1).

You win first turn. You resource...and put out the Magah Birds (getting the other two from your deck, as usual). You pass to your opponent.

They go, and put down 1 or 2 characters, and attack a story. You don't bother blocking.

Your turn...you draw...resource again (let's assume you are doing a Agency / Hastur - common mix) and draw an Unorthodox Psychologist or some other 2-cost Agency character, that has Investigation.

You pay 2 and put that character out. Your other 2 you spend on Victoria Glasser. She comes into play, and you select one of the Magah Birds as a target ....you drive your OWN Magah Bird insane. With your last resource, you pay for "The Greatest Fear"... which naturally will "target" you. If you have "set it up" - properly, in theory you could have it so the only cards in your hand are actually Event and / or Support cards.

If so...do you then get to place 2-Success Tokens on a story, then attack with your Investigator, and if no enemies oppose you - take the story in one go ?

Similarly, you generally wouldn't want to turn one of your characters insane, unless you are already at an advantage or have ways to restore them easily.

Something else that might go wrong with this particular example is that your opponent will get to act before you after you've put Victoria Glasser into play and turned your Magah Bird insane. He might do something to wreck your carefully prepared plan...

That's a good point....and it IS highly situational....but I just wanted to know that, in a pinch - you could try it out if you needed to (or had no other certain way of winning, and wanted to try it as a "last chance" type of move for the final one or two Tokens).
