Help my help one of my players roleplay his Missionary

By Deadline247, in Rogue Trader

The player in my group who plays the Missionary is sort of shy, but he really likes the fluff behind the Missionary class and the Ecclesiarchy in general. His character is rather hateful of xenos, and our Rogue Trader just recently hired four Kroot as mercenaries on Footfall (we're playing Lure of the Expanse). The Missionary is upset about this, but I don't think he really knows how to roleplay this in a fun, effective way.

My first thought would be for him to either flip out and just flame them all (with the help of his underlings). But I also had the idea of the Missionary threatening to lower crew morale (well within his power to do so) if the Rogue Trader doesn't dump these xenos scum ASAP.

What do you think? I'd love to pass along a suggestion or two for him to choose from.

sounds like a tough situation. He hates xenos, the Rogue trade just hired 4 of them and now the missionary is about to pop his cork. He dosen't have to harm them, just cast a hateful gaze at them once in a while and mumble curses every time they pass in the hall. The RT has his right to hire xenos, after all the one with the thrones rules. lol. but still could make for some funny inter party conflict and have it climax into an epic drinking contest. see who can hold their grog, missionary or kroot mercenary. barrles of fun

could also create a bad internal conflict.

depends on the level of fun your players can have. I know my group would not hesitate to kill one of them (either the RT or the misionairy depending on who as the best speech).

He must be mighty disappointed in his captain. He could follow him and/or the Kroot around, preaching of the evils of Xenos. "Suffer not the xenos to live!"

He could exaggerate to the Captain or Seneschal that crew morale is suffering because of the abominations hired, and offer to "fix the morale problem before we have a mutiny on our hands" by executing the Kroot on the hanger deck.

Depending on how the other players roll, he could either just be vocal about this, or take action. My players love to threaten and bluster at each other, but rarely murder hirelings. Well, sometimes.

DANGER WILL ROBINSON: Some groups might not like one player telling others who they can hire, and it could get into player vs. player, rather than character vs. character. Make sure those not steeped in 40k lore understand that hatred of xenos is normal in the Imperium, and that the mingling on the frontiers is not typical.

AND WHAT KIND OF GAME DO YOU WANT? I told my players before I started the campaign that I wanted to be able to give them plots that required them to negotiate with xenos. After 2 years of Dark Heresy under a puritan Inquisitor, I wanted to open things up a bit. Which is not to say all the characters have to like xenos, but they can't stop the adventure in its tracks with their xenosphobia .

Side note...the Rogue Trader has not brought the Kroot back to the ship yet. In fact, he hasn't officially offered them a long-term job as of yet...though he has dangled that carrot in front of the Kroot for motivation. While the PCs have gone back to the ship a couple of times to sleep, the Rogue Trader asked the Kroot to sleep in their current place of residence on Footfall for the time being...knowing that bringing xenos on board might not be the most popular move. I suspect he is eventually going to bring them aboard though for the remainder of this adventure.

The Rogue Trader character is already not all that favorable toward the Ecclesiarchy, although he tolerates the Missionary and his underlings on his ship since taking them along was a stipulation of his family's Warrant of Trade. The players are fine with this bit of PC conflict (including the Missionary player), however the Missionary player is not as experienced in roleplaying as the other guys and I think he's just looking for a bit of inspiration on how to handle the Kroot situation.

On our ship, the Explorator, Missionary and Navigator (an NPC played by me) don't view themselves as working "for" the Rogue Trader so much as working along side him (although the get along alright most of the time). Only the Void Master and Arch-Militant are hardcore devoted to the RT.

One thing he could do : take some contacts with the faithfull of Footfall to find a suitable human replacemetn for the xeno scum, something like a group of colonists/scouts/ex-guardsmen - basically humans with th same sort of skills as the kroots, lettign him tell the Trader 'no need for those filthy xenos, I've found humans who can perform the same job'. Even if game mechanic wise they aren't as good, they'll be human... And the situation will give the player some practice at RP while he pokes around for those guys.

Another option would be for him to ask for the xenos to be sanctioned by the Ecclesiarchy before letting them on board - something a discrete bribe from the other players can handle quickly and efficiently. Without bothering a faithfull servant of the God-Emperor with such boring mundane detaisl of course...

True, you could simply work around the problem with npc replacements. However what if everyone in or out of the game that kroot are awsome, equal chance of player on player conflict. even more delectible the player vs npc. the Missionary could always meditate for a few hours to get over his xenophobia, well after all the Rogue Trader is in command and as long as his actions do not pose a threat to the imperium he can have his xeno hirelings. Now if one of the kroot inquestion was a player character could we expect the same lv as the current issue or would the missionary and xeno player foster a cobra Vs mongoose relationship." tune in next week to find out" future of reality TV, priceless

The RT could also try to explain to the missionary that sacrificing xenos is much more efficient then emperor worshiping souls. Then you settle the right full human settlers and just erase the krrot out of the victory story!

Why sacrifice the xenos, waste of a perfectly good investment. nothing wrong with xenos around, they liven up the atmosphere. Or did the missionary take the paranoid talent. hey, xenos add flavor to the game. DH can only go as playable choices Human, human or Human. RT is at least trying to make that change. as long as this issue stays with the missionary alone. you might still have a use for into the storm
