Funny thing happened on the way to Arkham

By H.P. Lovecraft2, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

Ive heard people describe Arkham Horror as being a fun game, but no one told me it was also a funny game, here I am playing for the first time, trying to gather a good team of investigators to aid me in the nearly impossible task of defeating an Ancient One, in this case YIG. So Sister Mary and I (Dexter Drake) join up with Kate Winthrop to do battle with this hell spawn, and to our surprise.......(I gave her the items she starts off with, a few miscellaneous things plus a common item) and what does she bring to fight the beast?....a bottle of whiskey. So much for defeating ol Yig, I got a **** drunk on my side partido_risa.gif

That just made me chuckle upon seeing it, anyone else have any funny Arkham Horror stories

Well off to fight Yig..................boy I need a drink

On the contrary: Yig is one of the very few Ancient Ones where Whiskey has some sort of an application (his attack affects sanity).

But you're right, if that's ALL you're bringing to the fight, then... I guess at best you're disinfecting your snakebite wounds.

Ahhh, well....Scientist....smarthappy.gif

Yea, a Whiskey may help reduce Sanity losses by 1, so when Yig attacks and you fail his skill check, you may discard Whiskey to only suffer 1 Stamina damage.

Is it just me or is Kate Winthrope one of the worst investigators in the game? With only 1 Focus and somewhat mediocre ability, she rarely packs a punch. Although I guess you could just move her from one frequently abused unstable location to another or let her sit at Unvisited Isle

Hey Tibs thanks, Lovecraft did a lot of ghostwritings, its mostly what paid the bills, or at least it paid gthe bills better then his stories unfortunaly had at he time. I shall put it on my list at 1928, Im only up to 1917 in my reading for that book/paper that Im writing.

Haha, it's funny though, what you've described and does indeed make sense that Whiskey would reduce Sanity losses. Sister Mary gets drunk before the fight. When she's stoned like that, she is less likely to be affected by the horrors she sees, since her mind is clouded.

Kate: Holy crap, did you see the size of Yig's tongue? This creature would make an interesting topic for a research paper.

Mary, dunk: yea, Kate, you and your **** science(burp). She starts murmuring a silent prayer under her breath. "Oh, Lord, forgive me for thy servant has indulged in the forbidden nectar(burp). ****, where did my Bible go?"

On our first game my friend who was playing as Dexter Drake pretty much was the comic relief of our story. Not at all intentionally.

For example, he went to the shop, and promptly failed his speed check and was knocked out by a random club. After waking up and leaving the hospital, he went to the river docks, where he decided to fish around in the water for shiny things, (literally it said 'something shining in the water') and failed his luck check. So he was promptly dragged into the water by the neck, by some random tentacle. His game pretty much continued like that for the night.

Then again that same game I was playing as Diamond and was pretty much so many successes that I was pretty much sprinting up and down the board shooting things. Though to be fair it was mostly luck, I did feel it was a pretty hilarious contrast.

Ha, great. I love Sister Mary. Her preventive special ability may not be so hot, but she's the only investigator who starts with a blessing which is awesome. If she begins the game with a good Combat skill and a weapon she can become a menace to all who dare oppose her. A nun on a motorcycle, holding a bottle of scotch and a shotgun on her shoulder is a terrifying sight!(:

I got one from one of my first games of AH:

I as Michael McGlen entered the South Church carring his starting equipment - a tommy gun in one hadn and a dynamite in the other.

Imagine now: A tough mob soldier who didnt even take hit hat off, hell he even has his cigar lightened, walks through the church with both weapons exposed and looks around the people who gathered for the worship. And then Father Michel comes and says "Take all you need my son!"... I smile and read furhter... "Search the unique item deck for Holy Water" ... and the mood of a fearsom mob enforcer was gone :(

A few days ago we were playing a session against Ghatanothoa- With Tommy Muldoon, Rex Murphy and Amanda Sharpe. There are three faceup visage tokens on the AO's sheet. I draw an Environment Mythos card that says: for any investigator that is reduced to 0 Stamina or 0 Sanity while this card is in play roll a die. On a 1, that investigator is devoured. The Mythos card opens a gate to Ryleh in Whateley's Farm. Since it's the second gate to Ryleh on the board, Amanda fails her personal story and is devoured.

A new turn begins:

A replacement investigator is drawn(Jaqueline Fine)

Rex Murphy sits at Unvisited Isle on a Chtlonian. He fails his evade check, gets knocked out cold, moves to the Hospital, rolls a 1 and is devoured as per the Mythos card.

Tommy Muldoon uses Ancient Tablet, gets two clue tokens from this, then flips the fourth visage token and discovers Ghatanothoa's face. The visage tokens are reshuffled.Tommy is devoured, which means he passed his personal story, which yields another investigator 5 clue tokens. Jaqueline Fine gets the generous gift of Mythos lore, flips a random visage token from the newly reshuffled batch, and... shares Tommy's destiny.

So, I got 4 investigators devoured in a single turn. And each from a different combination of game effects. That's a personal record, I'd say.

God, How I love this game for all its subtle fatal combos

Same thing happened in my first game... while Monterey and Mandy ran all over the board killing things and shutting gates, the player who was Drake got trapped in the Spell Shop by a shoggoth in the streets that didnt move the rest of the game. Drake sat in the shop for three rounds before making a break for it and getting KOd by the shoggoth (to wind up in st. mary's, still trapped). It took him three more tries to escape from the hospital (each time he would fail his evasion, pass his will or have enough sanity, then get KOd)

He should've reduced his Will to minimum, and drained his Sanity enough tyo be driven insane so he won't be stuck in the Uptwon neigborhood. But you never know how the dice will treat you.

The Uptown neigborhood had become the burial place of our entire group once when we drew the Thousand Young Rumor. We all gathered on the street to make the Lore check needed to pass the rumor,(we were one success short) but a single gate burst spelt our doom when three flying monsters in the sky swooped down at once on Uptown street, and we were all devoured. It was a session with Glaaki as the Ancient One so the terror level increased by six, and it was game over.
