Lily Chen vs. Cthulhu-a broken combination?

By zealot12, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

Since Lily Chen can change her max Sanity and Stamina stats at will, how can Cthulhu's attack/slumber ability hurt her? Is she immune to those effects?

She still loses one from either San or Sta, need to count those mods into her printed maximums. Her stats add up to 11 total, so she does get an extra turn compared to most others.

Lily Chen can raise one of her maximums, but she has to lower the other to do so. If Cthulhu's lowering one too... then she's losing two maximums per round and gaining one. Eventually she'll reach zero of one of them and die.

That's what I don't really get. Let's say she chooses to lower her Max Stamina as a result of Cthulhu's attack. At the upkeep of her next turn in final battle she can move the skill slider to the left and regain that lost stamina. She can keep lowering and regaining her max stamina/sanity every turn.I mean she's not losing two maximums; she may lose one, and then regain it during upkeep. Then when she is at the highest value of her max Stamina, for instance, she may begin lowering& regaining Sanity by moving the slider to the right. When she reaches the far right, she can begin lowering Stamina again, and on it goes. Am I getting this wrong? Dunno, maybe I'm getting confused for some reason. I haven't actually played with Lily Chen versus Cthulhu; I was just thinking about it.

This is probably where you're getting confused. During final battle, you first have Upkeep, where Lily can effectively raise one maximum and lower another.

Say she goes from a 6/5 to a 7/4.

But then before the end of the round, Cthulhu will attack, forcing her to lower one of her maximums:

She is now either a 6/4 or a 7/3.

When Chulhu lowers one of her maximums, it's not the same thing as moving her top slider one notch.

One more query about Cthulhu.

When Cthulhu awakens, do investigators regain their natural maximum Sanity and Stamina before the final battle? Since he's no longer asleep, his slumber ability should stop working.

This has been answered by Kevin Wilson in the past: the slumber ability is still in effect, the investigators' maximums won't suddenly increase when he wakes up. I believe the same applies to all other slumber abilities that might affect final combat.

Thanks.

Had the most nerve-wrecking session against Chtulhu today which culminated in one of the most fun epic battles we've ever had(using Tibs' proposed variant of mixing red and green cards). We lost so hard, despite being spared by his flabby maw plot card(Roll a die and substract 1 from the result. That many investigators are devoured. I managed to roll 1, ha!). We played with the Mother Hydra herald and had two shoggoths roaming the streets when he awoke. It wasn't pretty. The AO gained unnatural regeneration in one round setting us back even more.

We've only managed to seal one gate, I retired one investigator(great strategy, actually) when he had two Injuries, but the replacement player didn't help us much.Oh, well, there are times when the game truly mops the floor with you, so to speak.(:
